Randy received his formal training with Roberto Venn where he was awarded his Certificate of Luthiery. Here he learned the fundamentals of instrument repair, design, and construction.
He also did a 3 year tenure with Luthier Don Gallagher of Gallagher Guitars, Wartrace, TN. During his tenure at Gallagher his responsibilities included various guitar manufacturing details and all repairs and restorations during his time there. He continued his education and employment with First Quality Musical Supplies Louisville, KY. He worked 4 years side by side with founder Bill Sullivan of Sullivan & Sons, as Lead Luthier. His duties included all major repairs and restorations and he also did all tenor to 5 string banjo neck conversions. Other duties included were fretting, binding, shaping, finishing and final assembly of all Sullivan banjos numbers 1 through 75.
The following is a testimonial on the quality of Randy Broyles' work.
"We received the first replica Mastertone banjo neck (attached to our arch top TB-75 pot) today and Peter Becker and myself are impressed down to the bottom of our shoes. The color match is extraordinary. Weve had other people do necks for us but nobody has gotten it as perfectly right as Randy Broyles. That the job was completed in a timely fashion also didn't escape us (we could tell you tales about having at times waited for over a year for some unnamed builders). We look forward to working with your company again many times in the future."
Stan Jay, president Mandolin Brothers, Ltd.
