This week we present in concert Missy Andersen and her band. R&B or RnB, has meant many things since its beginning as a genre. From 40’s jazz & swing, 70’s funk, and 90’s contemporary hip hop and pop, R&B has had many faces as the genre evolved. Expand the abbreviation to its full name of Rhythm and Blues and one immediately thinks of the 50’s and 60’s when the genre was of a slick mix of Uptown blues, Memphis soul, and Southern gospel. This unique period is the songbook for an Evening of Rhythm & Soul with Missy Andersen featuring Mercedes Moore and Sharifah Muhammad. Showcasing soul classics and inspired originals, the dynamo three-o of blues belters, shouters, and foot-stompers promise to remind us what made the music so great. All accomplished singers with their own busy projects and able to command any stage alone, they’ll combine their powerful voices to perform the music that served as the soundtrack for some of the most significant events in American history. A nominee of the prestigious Blue Music Awards for Soul Blues Female Artist in 2015 and 2016, Missy Andersen oozes deep, Southern soul. Self-described as “earthy and organic,” her gospel-tinged vocals helped secure rave reviews for her sophomore album, In the Moment, and a yearend spot on Living Blues Top 50 of 2014. She and her guitarist/bandleader/husband, Heine, maintain a busy schedule touring and performing as a duo as well as a band.

A frequent performer on national and international blues festival stages, Mercedes Moore captivates audiences with her sultry voice and elegant presence. A San Diego favorite, she and her band have developed a following for consistently delivering diverse and danceable rhythms inspired by 50’s and 60’s blues and soul. Whether it’s a soulful ballad or a playful, jump blues; three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Mercedes Moore always delivers the goods with style and grace.

Recently featured in San Diego Troubadour, Sharifah Muhammad is a force that is cannot be denied. Her voice blends power, range, and emotion for a style that is uniquely hers – simultaneously contemporary, yet reminiscent of an earlier era. Lead singer of Sharifah and the Good Thing, her debut album, Real Soul-RnB, was nominated for Best Blues Album at the 2014 San Diego Music Awards and competed for best Self-Produced CD at the 2015 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.
