After years of honky-tonk electric guitar followed by concentrating on solo fingerstyle guitar this duo with Kenny Blackwell is a real horizon broadener. \nAfter Kenny and Dorian met by chance in a music store in San Luis Obispo\, then at a backyard jam session\, and again at a music convention in Los Angeles\, they decided it was time to play some music together. Kenny Blackwell\, mandolinist and guitarist who studied with the legendary Jethro Burns\, has been a fixture in the West Coast bluegrass scene since 1978. He is known for his extensive studio work on various projects\, as well as his collaborations with progressive fiddler Richard Greene and his membership in the Laurel Canyon Ramblers\, a legendary California bluegrass outfit. His background includes collaborations with the likes of Linda Ronstadt\, Johnny Rivers and Neil Diamond. Kenny wanted a chance to play outside of the bluegrass genre in which he is constantly in demand. Guitarist Dorian Michael was looking for a skillfull musician who understood a wide variety of roots music. Six months later their first CD was released and they were touring as a duo. \nThe duo’s diverse backgrounds are the wellspring for a performance of exciting and heartfelt music. Featuring the Chair\, Scott Tennant\, William Kanengiser\, and Brian Head plus several of their fabulous students performing solo as well as duets. \nScott Tennant is a founding member of the the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet\, the Grammy-winning ensemble composed entirely of alumni of the USC Thornton School of Music\, and is himself considered to be one of the world’s top classical guitarists. During his student years at USC (1980-1986)\, he studied with Pepe Romero and James Smith and was a chosen performer in the USC Segovia Masterclasses of 1981 and 1986. He has authored several books and articles on guitar technique\, including the best-seller Pumping Nylon\, which has attained cult classic status. Scott Tennant has made numerous recordings as a soloist on the GHA\, Delos and GSP labels\, and with the LAGQ he has recorded for GHA\, Delos\, Sony Classical\, Windham Hill\, Deutsche Grammophon and Telarc labels.Tennant is best known for his performances of Spanish music\, and his recordings of the music of Joaquín Rodrigo. \n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam Kanengiser has forged a career that expands the possibilities of the classical guitar. A prize-winner in major competitions (1987 Concert Artists Guild International Competition\, Toronto Guitar ’81) he has toured throughout North America\, Asia\, and Europe with his innovative programs and expressive musicianship. He recorded four CD’s for the GSP label\, playing music as diverse as Caribbean\, Eastern European\, and jazz. A member of the guitar faculty at the USC Thornton School of Music since 1983\, he has given master classes around the world. As a founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet\, William Kanengiser has given hundreds of recitals and concerto appearances around the world\, and has recorded over a dozen releases.\n \n\nBrian Head\, associate dean\, academic affairs\, professor of practice\, and director of undergraduate music theory\, classical guitar and composition at USC Thornton School of Music\, was voted Outstanding Thornton School Graduate of 1991. Brian Head was chosen in 1999 as the USC Gamma Sigma Alpha Professor of the Year. A prolific composer\, arranger and record producer\, he’s played with luminaries of many musical worlds: folk (Boys of the Lough\, Kathryn Tickell\, Aly Bain\, Danny Thompson\, Arty McGlynn\, Nollaig Casey – and Máire)\, jazz (Stéphane Grappelli and Diz Disley) and comedy (Fred Wedlock) – receiving a silver disc for producing Fred’s international hit Oldest Swinger in Town\, to which he also composed the tune and which reached No 2 in the charts in the UK and No 1 in several other countries. Maire Ni Chathasaigh is one of Ireland’s most influential traditional musicians\, described by the late Derek Bell of the Chieftains as “the most interesting and original player of the Irish harp today” and as “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” by Live Ireland. She has played harp since the age of eleven. As a 1970s West Cork teenager steeped in the oral tradition she developed new techniques that made it possible for the first time to play traditional music on the harp in a stylistically accurate way. These soon became the norm amongst both her contemporaries and the younger generation of Irish players. In 2001 she received Irish music’s most prestigious award\, that of Traditional Musician of the Year – Gradam Cheoil TG4 – “for the excellence and pioneering force of her music\, the remarkable growth she has brought to the music of the harp and the positive influence she has had on the young generation of harpers”. She won the All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic Harp Competitions several times and in 1985 recorded the first harp album ever to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music\, The New-Strung Harp- “an intensely passionate and intelligent record and a milestone in Irish harp music” THE IRISH EXAMINER. DESCRIPTION:British guitarist Clive Carroll has a deep knowledge of music history\, arranges\, composes\, can lay down a blues with the best of them\, and is a captivating performer. Born in England\, Clive began his musical journey in Chelmsford\, Essex. His parents had a taste for American country and old time music and it wasn’t long before Clive was playing in the family band on a homemade banjo. By his early teens\, guitar in hand\, Clive was traversing the worlds of soul\, pop\, funk\, and traditional Irish music\, balancing his affinity for Slayer with the etudes of Tárrega. This breadth of musical curiosity was to become one of his strengths; even as a child Clive was as comfortable accompanying a group of folk singers as he was jamming along to Nirvana or performing standards with the Essex Youth Orchestra. Clive went on to earn a 1st Class Honours Degree in Composition and Guitar from the famed Trinity College of Music in London\, all the while balancing his classical work with forays into the world of the steel string guitar. By the time he graduated from Trinity\, Clive had not only penned orchestral works\, he had written an album’s worth of solo acoustic guitar music. A chance meeting with English guitar legend John Renbourn proved the catalyst for Clive’s debut album\, “Sixth Sense”\, which Renbourn deemed “a milestone in the journey of the steel-string guitar”. He subsequently took Clive on the road with him and the pair toured North America and Europe together\, launching Clive’s solo performing career. Since then\, Clive has established himself as one of the world’s premier acoustic guitar players. He has toured across Europe\, Australia\, the Middle East and North America\, garnering praise for his sublime performances of everything from 16th and 17th century lute music to Jazz standards\, Blues\, Irish reels and his own groundbreaking compositions. Lauded guitarist Tommy Emmanuel (“Clive Carroll is one of my favorite guitarists\, Trust me go see him!”) has also taken Clive on the road\, and similar nods to Clive’s musicianship have been given by everyone fromclassical guitarist John Williams to Madonna\, Guy Ritchie\, Michelin award-winning chef Jean-Christophe Novelli\, and the Sultanate of Oman. DESCRIPTION:Jim Kimo West and Ken Emerson are both living legends in the world of Hawaiian slack key and acoustic steel guitar. They strive for freshness and spontaneity in their duet shows in keeping with the true Hawaiian “kanikapila” style. Both Ken and Kimo have a number of Grammy\, recording and touring credits.
