DESCRIPTION:EJ Mathews 2017 Breakout Artist of the Year—Living Blues\, Magazine.\n \nEvery once in a blue moon someone comes out with a song that makes you take notice. Not only did he come with a song\, but he also made a video to go along with it. Texas born E.J. Mathews\, originally from Atlanta\, Texas now makes his home in Dallas. Mathews lived just outside Atlanta\, Texas in the small rural community of Bivins\, Texas. Located near Leek Creek and the Louisiana state line he got his musical influence from his grandfather who was from south Georgia. Mathews recalls his “granddaddy Zan used to sit on the front porch at night and play slide guitar with his pocket knife\, all the while spitting watermelon seeds off the porch and watching lightnin’ bugs flicker in the night.”\nHis granddaddy loved listening to country and blues and Mathews says his musical style is somewhere in the middle\, a little bit of the blues\, with a touch of some country mixed in.\nHe said he wants to tell a story through his music his way and that’s the same philosophy he uses when writing a song such as “Down On The Creek (Ford Pickup).”\nMathews says he has over a hundred songs he has written and has been told by some people his music sounds like swamp boogie and country blues. Mathews says “It’s just me\, my kind of music.”\n“I don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.”His parents divorced years ago and so he moved to Oklahoma for a spell where he graduated school and then headed back to the great state of Texas. Mathews worked as a truck driver for years and now works in education in Desoto\, Texas. This engagement resulted in a fast and permanent friendship with the master blues\, ragtime\, and gospel guitarist. Rev. Davis was so taken by the young Ruskin’s skill and eagerness\, that he invited Rick to spend that summer with him at his Long Island home. By the end of the summer\, Davis stopped teaching Rick new material and told him\, “It’s time you started paying attention to your own music.” Ruskin has been doing that ever since. \nIn addition to being a top guitar player\, Rick is a singer\, composer and arranger of note. DESCRIPTION:Two fabulous fingerstyle players with an array of styles on the same bill. One a “Slack Key” guitar specialist and the other a fabulous fingerstyle/slide guitarist who melds the two seamlessly into fantastic arrangements.  \nSlack Key” means that some of the strings on a guitar are slacked from standard tuning\, with the bass\, melody\, and improvisation played at the same time\, and is often played to accompany traditional dance or song. Many players use their own special tunings that often remain proprietary secrets. Tonights show will feature this unique and beautiful style of playing.\nJim “Kimo” West first visited Hana\, Maui in 1985\, after a long summer on the road as guitarist for famed musical satirist\, “Weird Al” Yankovic. As the sounds of Gabby Pahinui\, the Sons of Hawai’i\, Sonny Chillingworth\, The Sunday Manoa\, and others\, played on the turntable\, he jammed along for fun and relaxation. Already a devotee of open tunings\, he was immediately drawn to the gentle rhythms of ki ho ‘alu (slack key guitar) and soon began writing his own songs. The rich physical and cultural landscape of the Hana Coast has provided the inspiration for many of his compositions.\nWhile always retaining the heartfelt essence of traditional slack key\, Jim “Kimo” West brings much of his own musical heritage to his original ki ho’alu instrumentals. His style can best be described as “nahenahe”\, meaning “soft\, sweet or gentle voice”\, a fusion of old and new but still rooted deeply in tradition.\nJim lives in Los Angeles where he writes and produces music which has appeared in feature films and TV shows on all the major networks and cable channels.\nJim West’s latest recording “Moku Maluhia-Peaceful island” was nominated for a Grammy. “His Slack Key explorations in his unique and beautiful style\, and in various tunings\, including two of his own invention\, further accentuating his own sound”\n— George Winston. pianist/ guitarist \nPlus on the same bill Mark Leggett\, an artist who spends most of his time doing film scoring\, making a rare appearance performing his original tunes and arrangements. From New York’s Lincoln Center to the Cactus Cafe in Austin\, from Milano to Bangkok\, Michael continues to enchant\, dazzle and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique\, “soulful” expressiveness\, and versatility as a performer\, composer and arranger/producer. His performances\, played on both steel string and classical guitars\, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm n’ blues as he wins his audiences hearts with breath taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes. In the 80’s and 90’s Michael proved himself to be one of the world’s finest classical guitarists; twice winning the coveted National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant\, and taking First Prize in both the Guitar Foundation of America’s and the Music Teachers National Association’s Guitar Competitions. Acoustic Guitar magazine wrote “… if I were marooned on a desert island with a limited selection of recordings\, this one would be among my choices…I have seldom heard a more beautiful album. Other young guitarists have excellent technique\, but few have such style and musicality\, and Chapdelaine’s beautiful tone is the nearest to Segovia’s that I can recall.” In 1994 Michael turned his attention to pop music\, in arranging\, producing and recording Time-Life Music’s beautiful Guitar by Moonlight collection (also released as “with love”)\, which sold 250\,000 copies in it’s first two years in the stores. In 1998\, he once again\, expanded his musical range and gained instant notoriety and credibility in the “acoustic music” world as a “fingerstyle” guitarist and composer\, by winning the National Fingerpicking Championships at Winfield. Michael is Professor of Music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico\, and has previously been on the faculties of the University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University. Yet\, Bernie Pearl is no hidebound traditionalist. As music critics and aficionados have said for years\, he is a craftsman who packs his songs with melodic interpretations that are new and personal each time he picks up his vintage Martin or National. To hear him tell it\, “I’m not a retro player. I’m playing real blues for right now.” \nBernie\, who grew up in the Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights\, took up the guitar in the 1950’s. Later\, at his brother’s legendary blues showcase\, the Ash Grove\, he met\, studied with\, and often performed with greats like Hopkins\, Lipscomb\, and MacDowell as well as with Freddie King\, Albert Collins\, and Big Mama Thornton. Bernie played duets with John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village. “They were my teachers\,” he says\, “and it wasn’t just music they were teaching. If you took Mance or Lightnin’ out fishing you got philosophy\, history\, and lessons in life”. \nArmed with the teachings of those and other blues icons\, Bernie raises the roof with dazzling guitar solos – acoustic and electric – and with his own Bernie Pearl Blues Band\, which has backed the likes of B.B. King\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Willie Dixon\, and Big Joe Turner. The Bernie Pearl Blues Band has been a popular draw at many of Southern California’s best-known musical haunts: the House of Blues\, California Plaza Presents\, the Blue Café\, Disney’s California Adventure\, and the Playboy Pasadena Community Jazz Festival. Bernie has appeared at major Festivals in Chicago\, The Poconos\, Vancouver\, Portland\, and Long Beach\, as well as in Europe. \nA life-long blues evangelist\, Bernie began broadcasting Nothin’ But the Blues on KPPC FM in 1968\, making him L.A.’s first all-blues FM disc jockey. He went on to host the blues on KLON and KCRW from 1980-92\, helping found the Long Beach Blues Festival along the way. \nHis 15-year relationship with Louisiana blues man Harmonica Fats produced three outstanding CDs\, with the unplugged Two Heads Are Better and Blow\, Fat Daddy\, Blow\, each garnering W.C. Handy nominations in the mid-1990’s. Tonight Pearl shares the stage with bassist/producer Mike Barry who is a perfect match to set the groove for the tunes they perform. \nBernie applied his studio skills as a producer and songwriter-arranger of jazz-rocking violin pioneer Papa John Creach’s critically-acclaimed 1992 Papa Blues CD (Bee Bump BBCD 03). \nAs president of Big Time Blues Productions\, Pearl was named national “Blues Promoter of the Year” by the Blues Foundation in 1987\, and he continues to book\, promote\, advertise\, and oversee blues acts at annual events such as the Big Time Blues Festival and the Blues Harmonica Blowdown. DESCRIPTION:Rural Rhythm Records recording artist Edgar Loudermilk’s signature voice\, bass skills\, and songwriting are a family tradition for this Louvin Brothers’ descendant. Loudermilk’s distinctive and powerful vocals cut to the heart of a song\, while also winning over audiences with his friendly\, down-home style. Having experienced a long tenure of performing\, including several industry awards\, with IIIrd Tyme Out\, Rhonda Vincent\, and Marty Raybon\, Edgar has also had monumental success with the IBMA Emerging Artist nomination for his duo work with Adkins & Loudermilk. Edgar wrote or co-wrote the majority of the music that topped and still remains on the bluegrass charts from the Adkins & Loudermilk album release. Edgar’s music is a mainstay on bluegrass radio and he has been a “Most Played” Sirius Bluegrass Radio Musician since his start. \nIn addition to touring and performing\, Edgar Loudermilk has had great success as a songwriter\, with over 50 self-penned songs\, many of which have been recorded by others. The album went on to be #1 on Splice Today’s Top 10 Country Albums of 2017. \nIn 2015 Edgar stepped out forming his own band with the highly acclaimed guitarist\, Jeff Autry. The Edgar Loudermilk Band\, featuring Jeff Autry released the well-received “Georgia Maple” album in 2016\, garnering significant airplay. In 2018 the band released a single\, “It’s a Way of Life That Stands the Test of Time\,” debuting in the Top 20 of the Bluegrass Today Airplay charts. Penned by Loudermilk and Wayne Benson\, the 2018 release received fantastic audience response during the band’s live performances on their coast-to-coast tours. \nThe Edgar Loudermilk Band\, featuring Jeff Autry\, emphasizes the core vocal trio of the band\, Edgar Loudermilk\, Jeff Autry\, and Zack Autry. Each of the three shares the spotlight as lead vocalist\, in addition to all three shining on harmony vocals. In addition\, Jeff Autry and Zack Autry are both accomplished songwriters\, bringing not only tightly constructed and intricate instrumentals\, but also lyrical delights. \nWhile the band’s vocal arrangements meld together like a tightly woven tapestry\, the musicianship in this band is spot on every performance. DESCRIPTION:British guitarist Clive Carroll has a deep knowledge of music history\, arranges\, composes\, can lay down a blues with the best of them\, and is a captivating performer. He has toured extensively as a solo artist\, performed with the late John Renbourn and International Guitar Night\, has taught workshops including weeklong courses at Swannanoa Gathering\, and has released four CDs and a concert DVD. A chance meeting with the late John Renbourn changed the course of Clive’s musical career and the two toured the U.K. and North America together\, with Renbourn encouraging Clive to the U.K. and North America together\, with Renbourn encouraging Clive to release his first solo album in 2000. Since then Clive has gone from strength to strength\, touring solo around the world and alongside lauded guitarist Tommy Emmanuel. Tommy Emmanuel recently said “Clive Carroll is one of my favorite guitarists. He’s touring the US this March. Trust me go see him!” Clive has also composed music for major films and has been awarded an array of awards and accolades\, such as inclusion in Total Guitar Magazine’s “Top 10 Acoustic Guitarists of All Time”. His latest recording\, The Furthest Tree\, is a wide ranging and innovative program of mostly solo steel-string guitar and is an absolute gem. The album begins with a tribute to Clive’s mentor\, John Renbourn\, who passed away last year. Entitled The Abbot’s Hymn (Renbourn was known as ‘The Abbot’ because of his fondness for an East Anglian ale of the same name)\, it’s a wonderful introduction to an album chock full of superb playing and outstanding compositions. We were recently saddened to find out Radim recently was one of the many victims in the Paradise\, CA Camp Fire losing his house and many of his instruments. Please join us tonight welcoming him back to Boulevard Music and continuing his lifelong journey bringing joy and enlightenment to the masses he has performed for over the years.  Tonight he will perform on an assortment of different instruments from mandolin\, mandola to Irish bouzouki\, ukulele\, ethnic flutes\, and didgeridoo. Original music crossing the tracks of folk\, string jazz\, new age\, bluegrass\, flamenco\, gypsy\, Irish\, and classical music\, combined with Czech and eastern European traditional songs and instrumentals. Radim has extended the technical possibilities of the mandolin by\ninventing a masterful technique\, the “Zenkl style\,” in which a single mandolin sounds like two. \n“Radim has reinvented the mandolin in several different ways.”\n– David Grisman \n“Imaginative and great.”\n– Jerry Garcia \nPlus on the same bill Evan J. Marshall who is an internationally renowned mandolin virtuoso\, and is widely regarded as the world’s premier solo performer on mandolinin Duo-­Style. By himself\, he sounds like several of the world’s finest mandolinists performing together. His stylistic signature is Classical\, with strong influences from the Italian and American Folk traditions. Country guitar legend Chet Atkins called Evan “A true virtuoso\, one of the few great musicians of our time.” \nInspired by Atkins and violinist Jascha Heifetz\, Evan has created a uniquely recognizable approach to solo mandolin performance that combines bass lines\, chords\, rhapsodic runs and tremolo melodies. He started Classical violin studies at age seven\, and added the mandolin at age 14. \nIn addition to solo performances\, Evan has been a Featured Guest Artist in Pops concerts with a number of Symphony Orchestras\, including Houston\, Phoenix\, Long Beach\, Grand Rapids\, Fort Worth\, San Antonio\, Jacksonville\, and Pensacola. \nTwo of his solo mandolin recordings have been released by Rounder Records: \nEvan Marshall Is the Lone Arranger\, which the Washington Post labeled “Truly dazzling\,” the Raleigh-­Durham Independent called “Superhuman\,” and the Fresno Bee called “Mind-­boggling”; \nMandolin Magic\, which the St. Paul Pioneer Press applauded for a “Stunning mastery of interpretation.” \nEvan also has recorded four solo CDs for his own label\, Mandolin Conservatory. \nIn 1995 Evan made his first appearance on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. Between 1993 and 2005 Evan was a Featured Soloist at Disneyland\, performing his signature William Tell Overture: Finale for about two million visitors to the famous Golden Horseshoe Theater during the course of 10\,000 shows.
