SUMMARY:SIDELINE-BLUEGRASS GREATS
DESCRIPTION:Sideline is a pedigreed six-piece powerhouse whose style has set the pace in Bluegrass for over two decades. Founders Steve Dilling\, Skip Cherryholmes and Jason Moore can all claim their own historical significance to the genre as members of highly awarded groups\, multiple Grand Ole Opry appearances and years of national and international touring. \nWhat started as a side project for the seasoned players soon moved to the front and center as the three were joined by talents of Bailey Coe; guitar\, Troy Boone; mandolin\, and Daniel Greeson; fiddle\, and began to record and release albums in earnest. \nTo listen to Sideline reminds the fan of why so many people fall in love with Bluegrass in the first place; pulse-pounding drive\, songs sung from the heart\, perfected timing and dynamics as well as a visceral emotion in the rendering. A band that was started as an off-season fun experiment has become a full-time dream team of players and singers. \nThe band\, recorded or live\, move dynamically from well chosen\, hard-hitting neo-traditional covers of classic songs to new material curated by a band with a perfect sense of who they are and what they have to say. Combine all this with their on-stage energy and finesse as well as their powerful and affecting harmonies\, and you have the embodiment of the North Carolina Bluegrass sound. Sideline has released three national projects and currently records for the highly awarded Mountain Home Music Company based near Asheville\, NC. \nhttp://www.sidelinbg.com \n$20.00Read more

SUMMARY:THE AUSTIN LOUNGE LIZARDS
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Lounge Lizards are arguably the perfect pairing of their hometown’s slogan\, “Live Music Capital of the World\,” and its unofficial motto\, “Keep Austin Weird.” Since 1980\, the Lizards have been spoofing the topics American families try to avoid at the Thanksgiving table: subjects like politics\, religion\, romance\, and themselves. With pointed lyrics\, precise harmonies and instrumental expertise\, the band has become legendary for its satirical skewering through song.\nThe Lizards originated in 1976 in New Jersey\, when Hank Card (vocals\, rhythm guitar) and Conrad Deisler (vocals\, lead guitar\, mandolin) met as mutual history majors at Princeton University (not prison\, as sometimes thought) and started songwriting together. Following graduation\, both Hank\, a native Oklahoman\, and Conrad\, a Tex-Cali-Connecticut-Venezuelan\, ended up in Austin. University of Georgia philosophy graduate and banjo/dobro player Tom Pittman completed the founding-troubador trifecta in 1980\, and the Austin Lounge Lizards was born.\nWith a series of talented fellow players and writers\, the band began playing dates around Austin and across Texas. Soon\, they had developed a widespread following of loyal Lizard fans\, and by 1987\, began appearing at festivals and concerts throughout North America and in the United Kingdom. Five-time winners at the Austin Music Awards\, the Lizards have played many celebrated festivals\, including California’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and Strawberry Music Festivals\, New York’s Grey Fox and Florida’s Stringbreak Festivals\, Canada’s Vancouver and Edmonton Folk Festivals and Summerfolk\, the Americana and Iron Bridge Festivals in the UK\, and the Kerrville Folk Festival close to their home in Texas. They have also performed at dozens of prestigious concert venues\, including The Barns at Wolftrap (Vienna\, VA)\, the Freight & Salvage (Berkeley\, CA)\, the Kuumbwa Jazz Center (Santa Cruz\, CA)\, John Ascuaga’s Nugget (Sparks\, NV)\, Eddie’s Attic (Atlanta)\, The Ark (Ann Arbor\, MI)\, Calgary Folk Club (Alberta\, Canada)\, the Bass Performing Arts Center & McDavid Studio (Fort Worth)\, McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (Houston) and Austin’s own Cactus Café.\nAfter more than three decades\, Tom retired from the band to his luxurious mansion in Asheville\, NC\, in 2011. But the Lizards continue. Most recently\, in December 2016\, two former Lizards rejoined the group. The band is now made up of Hank\, Conrad\, Tim Wilson (fiddle\, mandolin\, vocals) and Kirk Williams (electric bass\, vocals).\nWith their unique amalgamation of highly literate Ivy League roots; an appreciation for folk\, country\, bluegrass\, and rock and roll musical styles; creative influences such as Frank Zappa\, Spike Jones\, George Jones\, Homer & Jethro\, and the Rolling Stones; and an unquenchable thirst for the absurd\, the Lizards specialize in musical eclecticism\, excellence and extreme entertainment. \nhttp://www.austinlizards.com \n$17.50Read more

SUMMARY:THE EVANGENITALS
DESCRIPTION:October 27 is a day to celebrate many things. It’s“American Beer Day”\, “Cranky Co-Workers Day”\, “Sylvia Plath Day”\, as well as“National Black Cat Day”\, “National Forgiveness Day”\, and “World Day for AudioVisual Heritage”. Only one band in Los Angeles has a song that embodies each and every one of those things — The Evangenitals! And that is something to celebrate! On October 27th at Boulevard Music in Culver City the Evangenitals take the stage at 8pm for two big sets of songs\, stories\, and sing-a-longs celebrating the full spectrum of human emotions and the darn good songs they make! Promising a solid PG-rating for the evening\, the whole family is welcome to come fall in love with the diverse catalog of band leader and songwriter Juli Crockett\, whose compositions range from truck-stop lullabies to Klezmer-punk-jazz odysseys\, heartbreaking ballads to hillbilly stomp. \nThe Evangenitals boast one of the most eclectic resumes in the indie music world. As live performers\, they’ve built a fiercely loyal following through a thousand shows at clubs\, coffee houses and festivals throughout the world (including Scotland’s prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival). Their shows are notable for music that can be bawdy and rollicking in one moment\, and\, in the next\, sufficiently mysterious and haunting to make the rowdiest of beer brawlers pause\, turn toward the stage and listen. \nFounded by playwright/director Dr. Juli Crockett (Padua Playwrights) and opera\, jazz & gospel singer Lisa Dee (Selah Gospel Choir) the Evangenitals are a veritable Pandora’s box of musical influences and experiences. On a quixotic crusade in the key of life hell-bent on breaking hearts open\, they are a genre-bending\, ever-creating force of nature. Filling out the band on this glorious night will be violinist Andrea Baker (The Moth Mainstage)\, bassist Joey Maramba (John Cale)\, Michael Feldman (Cousin Junebug) on keys\, and Robert Shaffer (Ninja Academy) on drums and percussion. \nRanging from truck-stop lullabies to Klezmer-punk-jazz\, ballads & barn-burners to hillbilly stomp\, citing influences from the new-wave intelligentsia of the Talking Heads to the archetypal fire of Johnny Cash\, all welded together with the mutant masterminds of Ween: The jukebox at the Mad Hatters tea party is the Evangenitals. \n“They seductively blow smoke rings of multi-colored campfire haze right through your musical senses. This is fun\, freedom\, and freak folk all delivered with a huge capital ‘F’.” (Jeff Perkins\, Seattle Pi) \n“I hope these underground bohemian diamonds stay true to themselves; they should never be tampered with.” (Music News Nashville) \n“The female harmonies between Juli Crockett and Lisa Dee are like the Andrews Sisters re-imagined as tragic mermaids… I haven’t heard harmonies ring this good since the Chapin Sisters were on the scene.” (LA Record) \n“Transports you back to a time when the music came from front porches and folk gatherings that allowed for the songwriting to take center stage.” (Today’s Country Magazine) \n“We’re talking about alt-country at its finest\, but that’s only the start. Influences of Southern rock\, cowpunk and even a little klezmer pop make a tasty brew.” (Pasadena Weekly) \n“Their sound is a chimera of American music\, a blend of country\, bluegrass\, jazz and rock\, with soul-fondling lyrics\, which might leave your skin wet from dancing and your eyes dripping tears of joy all in the same evening.” (Monterey County Weekly) \nhttp://www.evangenitals.com/ \n$17.50Read more

SUMMARY:BANSHEE IN THE KITCHEN
DESCRIPTION:Banshee in the Kitchen plays Celtic music with eclectic skill and merry abandon.Touring and recording since 2002\, the trio (tonight quartet) has delighted audiences in festivals\, theaters\, living rooms\, and countless other venues from NewYork to Japan. They take traditional Celtic tunes\, find the sweet spot between old and new\, stirring it all up with trademark playfulness and musicality they term “bansheefying”. \nTo do it right\, Celtic music requires a certain amount of sassiness\, a bit of impudence along with strong respect and joyful spirit. The four women of Banshee in the Kitchen know how to balance their audacity with reverence of the art form.\n—Joe Ross\, reviewer\, talentondisplay.com and Bluegrass Unlimited \nNational Champion hammered dulcimer player Brenda Hunter (fiddle\, hammered dulcimer) and Jill Egland (flute\,accordion\, whistle) trade off inspired flights of lead and counter melody overdynamic backing by Kat Edmonson (six and twelvestring guitar\, bouzouki). No strangers to the microphone\, the four trade off lead and backing vocals on a choice selection of songs\, as well as jocularcommentary in between. Add to this Kris Martin on stand-up bass and you have the filled out quartet version of the group. \nhttp://www.bansheeinthekitchen.com \n$15.00Read more

SUMMARY:JIM KWESKIN +THE DOWN HILL STRUGGLERS
DESCRIPTION:Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader. He also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival\, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days\, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded solo ventures\, as a member of the U and I band\, and with U and I bandmate Samoa Wilson\, and continues to perform widely in various formats. In recent years he and Geoff Muldaur have often appeared as a duo\, revisiting and expanding on their Jug Band repertoire. Tonight Jim will be accompanied by banjo\, fiddle\, and acoustic guitar—The Down Hill Strugglers. \n“The rock historian Ed Ward went so far as to place the Kweskin Band alongside the Beatles\, the Rolling Stones and the Byrds as that period’s most influential groups.” – Alex Ward\, The New York Times \n“When it came to jug band music\, razzmatazz jazz\, and swinging spins on Piedmont blues back in the ’60s\, Jim Kweskin was top dog. Jim Kweskin’s famed Jug Band hot-wired an entire movement that still has a certain impact on the folk scene today.” – Jim Macnie\, The Providence Phoenix \nThe Down Hill Strugglers ARE an old time string band based simultaneously out of Kentucky\, Louisiana and New York. They have released an album on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and are featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film\, “Inside Llewyn Davis” produced by T-Bone Burnett. The Down Hill Strugglers band formed while hanging out at the home of their mutual friend Peter Stampfel of the Holy Modal Rounders\, where they also met friend and mentor John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers. \nBy carrying the music of the old rural America forward The Down Hill Strugglers are extending the legacy of the New Lost City Ramblers by bringing archaic sounds into the present\, and challenge audiences reject a dystopian future animated by disco beats and their ilk. \nThe Greek legend of Sisyphus is: “Sisyphus (/ˈsɪsɪfəs/;[1] Greek: Σίσυφος\, Sísyphos) was a king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth) punished for chronic deceitfulness by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill\, only to watch it roll back down\, and to repeat this action forever.” The Down Hill Strugglers are the opposite\, desperately struggling to keep a huge boulder from rolling down a hill. \nThe Down Hill Strugglers are:\nWalker Shepard – fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, voice\nJackson Lynch – fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, voice\nEli Smith – banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, harmonica\, Jews harp\, pump organ\, voice\nThey are often joined by John Cohen – banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, voice\, brain \nSome Quotes About the Band: \n“The Down Hill Strugglers are\, to my ears\, the very best interpreters of traditional material presently going.” \nhttp://www.jimkweskin.com \nhttp://downhillstrugglers.blogspot.com/p/press.html \n$20.00Read more

SUMMARY:THE FOLK COLLECTION
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Collection takes you on a trip down memory lane in the footsteps of the Kingston Trio\, Peter\, Paul and Mary\, John Denver\, and the Limelighters with songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and the “MTA.”\nTHE FOLK COLLECTION could just as well be named the “Singing the Classic Songs of the ’60s Folk Era” group.  Tony Unger\, Ed Labowitz and Mike Sirota grew up in the 1960’s\, when they fell in love with the story songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era.  Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School\, and Mike joined the group in 2003. \nMuch of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages.  They have been influenced by the well-known groups of the era\, but they have their own blend\, sound – and humor.  Audiences get a real kick out of their unique medley arrangement of the great TV Western theme songs of the ’50s (including songs from the hit shows “Rawhide\,” Davy Crockett\,” “Maverick\,” and “Bonanza”). \nThe Folk Collection grew up loving folk music\, and the turnouts at their shows confirm that they have struck a “chord” with audiences of all ages\, who really like listening to the words and harmonies – and joining in when the mood and song fit.  Their show is centered around folk music and good clean jokes.  Their shows are family friendly\, and their audiences are often multi-generational – children\, parents\, grandparents\, and even great-grandparents – enjoying the music of The Folk Collection\, together.  Don’t miss an opportunity to share an evening with THE FOLK COLLECTION.  You will leave singing\, toe-tapping\, and smiling. \nhttp://www.thefolkcollection.com \n$17.50Read more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:SAM REIDER AND THE HUMAN HANDS
DESCRIPTION:Jazz pianist turned roots musician\, Sam Reider is redefining American music on the accordion. He’s been featured at Lincoln Center and on NPR\, and performed alongside pop stars\, jazz and folk musicians around the world ranging from Jon Batiste and Stay Human\, to viral YouTube sensation CDZA and T-Pain\, Bluegrass mandolin prodigy Sierra Hull to Venezuelan cuatro virtuoso Jorge Glem. \nReider’s debut record Too Hot To Sleep presents his unique compositional voice alongside an ensemble of top-drawer musical collaborators and compadres called The Human Hands. \nReider grew up in San Francisco\, the son of a musical theatre composer and klezmer musician. He began performing at a young age\, and was interviewed on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” on NPR when he graduated high school. At Columbia University\, he fell in love with American folk music. While writing his senior thesis comparing the songwriting of Woody Guthrie and Ira Gershwin\, Sam began studying bluegrass and old-time music\, transcribing the fiddle melodies for the accordion and learning to sing the songs. \nThis set him off on a journey that has taken him from back porches and dive bars to concert halls and major festivals in practically every state in the country. SUMMARY:DUO DELORO
DESCRIPTION:In a new and exciting collaboration\, guitarists Adam del Monte and Mak Grgic team up for a fresh and spontaneous duo\, with their program “La Buena Vida”\, taking you on a journey through Latin American and Spanish landscapes. Brand new arrangements of Guastavino\, Granados\, Albeniz\, traditional Argentinian Tangos and original flamenco compositions by Adam del Monte\, cast a renewed spirit into the world of the guitar duo expressed through two dynamic artists\, each with their own voice. \nA New Musical Landscape \nBecause a path of musical diversity has opened up in recent years in classical music and the classical guitar world there is space for a path of versatility and inclusiveness. In this program that Mak and Adam are offering\, you will find a wide array of styles and flavors\, ranging from the tradition of the Spanish “romantics”\, like Albeniz and Granados; to the more 20th century edginess of Ginastera\, the populism of Guastavino\, to the out right vanguard of progressive flamenco compositions by Adam del Monte\, arranged by him for two guitars. Mak\, being a young and versatile classical guitarist with much experience in other styles\, offers the perfect complementary counter balance to del Monte’s style. \nIn a world of guitar duos\, this one sounds completely fresh and rooted in attention to detail. \nhttps://www.adamdelmonte.com/duo-deloro \nhttps://www.adamdelmonte.com/ \n$20.00Read more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:DAVID GRIER—WORLD CLASS GUITARIST
DESCRIPTION:“David Grier is one of the best flatpicking guitarists on the planet earth”—GM. Check the dog in the picture. He isn’t sleeping he just got blown away by David’s playing. David is amazing\, one of the planets great flatpickers. Born in Washington\, D.C. in 1961\, a family move to Nashville at age 3 fully immersed David Grier into the bluegrass music world\, and at age 6\, he began playing the guitar. Today\, he is regarded as one of the premier acoustic guitarists in the world\, along with his early influences\, Doc Watson\, Tony Rice\, and family friend Clarence White. Recognized by Acoustic Guitar Magazine in 2000 as one of the Artists of the Decade\, and named Guitar Player of the Year three times by the International Bluegrass Music Association\, Grier has played on four Grammy Award-winning albums (True Life Blues: A Tribute to Bill Monroe; The Great Dobro Sessions; Alison Brown’s Fairweather; and Amazing Grace 2: A Country Salute to Gospel).Having released four albums on Rounder\, beginning in 1988 with Freewheeling\, Grier launched his own label\, Dreadnought Recordings\, with the 1998 debut release\, Hootenanny\, with Dirk Powell and Tim O’Brien (“endlessly inventive and tasteful” – All Music Guide). His most recent release\, Evocative (Dreadnought 2009)\, featuring 10 original tunes and a rich complement of collaborators (Victor Wooten\, Paul Franklin\, Stuart Duncan and more)\, has been hailed for its “deep musical introspection” as well as its “unmatchable mastery of the guitar” (Martin Mull). Other Dreadnought releases include the highly-acclaimed Live at the Linda (2007) and I’ve Got the House to Myself (2002) (“unfettered explosive invention” – Tim O’Brien).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect Quotes\n\n\n\n“His unmatchable mastery of the guitar is ever present\, but it’s the emotional exploration of themusic as a whole that leaves a lasting impression. There is evidence everywhere of deep musical introspection: real soul-searching\, and\, I would have to say\, bravery.”~ Martin Mull\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “David Grier is a willful\, accurate instrumentalist whose every note seems to run through a bright\, intelligent sieve. He maintains an unqualified standard of excellence in guitar playing\, always with a knack for unorthodox surprise.”\n~ Claire Lynch\n\n“Grier sculpts fascinating forms the way air and moisture combine to create billowing cumuli.”\n~Jazz Review\n\n“I’ve had the good fortune to see David Grier live several times\, and while I certainly delight in watching him play\, I especially like to watch folks who have never seen him live before. There’s this denial/acceptance cycle as they try to rationalize what they “know” to be possible with the guitar versus what their eyes and ears are experiencing. . . . And he does it in this self-effacing way that almost undercuts his musical inventiveness [and] preternatural skill.”\n~Chris Thiessen\, Flatpick Guitar Magazine\nhttp://www.davidgrier.com\n$17.50Read more

Their newest release\, the double disc CD “What Summer Brings\,” debuted in the Top 10 of the national album charts in the Netherlands\, and continues to win acclaim with fans and critics worldwide. \nAs a band\, the Lennons have recorded and performed together since the 1980s. Their music is a reflection of many of their influences while growing up in the small\, eclectic and culturally diverse beach town for which they are named. Their sound is at once familiar and fresh\, their classic rock and folk influences apparent in their pop sensibilities. You might recognize some of Venice’s influences\, such as Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, Fleetwood Mac\, Joni Mitchell\, Stevie Wonder\, Steely Dan\, the Eagles or Sly & the Family Stone. Their hybrid of folk/rock/soul is relevant\, alive and still growing\, with many fans worldwide considering them the torchbearers of the Southern California sound. \nVenice’s trademarks are their harmonies\, personal lyrics and high energy\, communal shows. These garner them huge ovations and encores at virtually every performance they’ve given\, from intimate theaters to sprawling festivals\, from the US to Europe. And it’s earned them major record releases on Sony Records\, Universal Records\, Atlantic Records and Vanguard Records. \nTheir distinctive vocal sound and harmonies have allowed Venice and its members to perform and/or record with some of the biggest names in the music industry\, including Bruce Springsteen\, Michael Jackson\, David Crosby\, Stevie Nicks\, Bon Jovi\, Jackson Browne\, Brian Wilson\, Cher\, Don Henley\, Elton John\, Michael McDonald\, Phil Collins\, Ozzy Osborne\, Billy Idol\, America\, Heart\, and the list goes on. The Lennons spent most of 2010-2013 as backing vocalists performing in the 219 show\, record-breaking worldwide arena and stadium tour of “Pink Floyd’s The Wall” with Roger Waters. Recently\, Venice was invited to contribute a track to the 2014 CD\, “Looking Into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne\,” joining such artists as Bruce Springsteen\, Bonnie Raitt\, Don Henley\, Ben Harper and Lyle Lovett. \nFor over fifteen years\, Venice has enjoyed a great level of success in the Netherlands\, where their harmonies and musicality are considered a modern extension of what many Europeans call “West Coast Music.” Venice continues to cultivate their reputation overseas and abroad on a longstanding friendship with their audiences\, where their post-show meet & greets can sometimes last nearly as long as their shows. \nWith the release of “What Summer Brings\,” Venice reaffirms that they are still at the top of their game\, ready to evolve and expand to new territories\, musically and globally. \n“Venice is the best vocal group in America right now. They’re better than anybody else I know. They’re fantastic. I’m a student of harmony. That’s my thing. I love all kinds of harmony. But I particularly love theirs\, because it’s so natural. It’s not like anybody else’s. Very unforced\, very from their hearts. I’ve been telling people about them since the first night I heard them. I’ve told everybody I could find that they were the best. This is my favorite band in the world.”\n— David Crosby \n“Venice\, one of my favorite bands\, is quintessentially Californian\, with soaring harmonies. They sing and play their asses off. I’ve seen them knock out many an unsuspecting crowd\, taking the audiences\, who had not come to see them\, completely by surprise. It’s such a pleasure to play with these guys\, because they have that power.”\n— Jackson Browne \nPine Mountain Logs\nImagine a group as great as Venice with those amazing vocals doing covers and you have the Pine Mountain Logs. Their just for fun tribute band\, and one of the best ones as you can imagine out there. \nAvoid the crowds and parking hassles of other areas on the Westside. Parking is free for one hour (2 hours with festival validation) in designated structures in downtown Culver City\, and dozens of dining options are available within walking distance. Culver City’s downtown area is Southern California’s best-kept secret\, featuring a wonderful mix of historic buildings\, boutiques\, theaters\, galleries\, and unique restaurants opening onto tree-lined streets. \nThe Dale Jones City Hall Courtyard is located at 9770 Culver Blvd. in Downtown Culver City (corner Culver Blvd. and Duquesne Ave.). SUMMARY:Culver City's Boulevard Music Summer Festival with the Tony Furtado Band
DESCRIPTION:Summer breezes… an intimate courtyard… free parking… and great music. Escape to Culver City for the 2018 Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival. Boulevard Music presents 6 free concerts on Thursday evenings at 7 pm from July 12 through August 16 in the palm-lined Dale Jones Courtyard of Culver City City Hall. Tickets may be purchased at Boulevard Music in person or over the phone and probably will not be available online. \nTonight we feature the Tony Furtado Band featuring Luke Price on Fiddle\, Rick Moors on bass\, and Mike Tempo on percussion.\n \nVery few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor\, but that’s another story). All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”\nA native of Pleasanton\, California\, who now makes his home in Portland\, Oregon\, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12\, inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies TV show and a sixth grade music report. He first attracted national attention in 1987\, when he won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Winfield\, Kansas. Not long after that\, Tony opted for the life of a full-time professional musician\, joining Laurie Lewis & Grant Street. A second victory at Winfield\, in 1991\, bookended his years with Grant Street.\nIn 1990\, Tony signed a recording deal with Rounder Records\, one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies. Beginning with Swamped in 1990\, he recorded six critically acclaimed albums for the label\, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss\, Jerry Douglas\, Tim O’Brien\, Stuart Duncan\, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. During this period\, Tony also performed and recorded with the band Sugarbeat and the Rounder Banjo Extravaganza with Tony Trischka and Tom Adams.\nBeginning in the late 1990s—influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder\, David Lindley and Taj Mahal—Tony added slide guitar\, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats: solo\, in a duo or trio or with his full five-person band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with such legendary musicians as Gregg Allman and with such esteemed slide guitarists as David Lindley\, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth.\nPlus Special Guest Luke Price\nLuke Price is a talented young multi-instrumentalist known for his great balance of taste\, rhythm\, and technical ability. He is known for pushing genres\, styles\, and fellow musicians into new territory while delicately respecting the great musical traditions that have come before.\nAt the young age of seven\, Luke began competing in fiddle contests and quickly made a name for himself winning the National Title at ages 12 and 17\, along with a long list of awards from contests all across the country\, including The Fiddlers Frolics and the Grand Masters. In 2014\, he became the National Old-Time Fiddling Grand Champion.\nAt the young age of 15\, he began teaching private lessons. While continuing to carry on the Texas fiddling and contest traditions\, Luke began to expand his playing to many other styles\, namely; jazz\, soul\, blues\, funk\, bluegrass\, and pop.\nAfter completing his B.A. in Professional Music at the esteemed Berklee College of Music\, he moved to Portland\, OR\, where he continues to record and perform his original music with his Old Soul Pop band\, Dean! He has performed and collaborated with a host of other musicians including: Tony Furtado\, Scott Law\, Jesse Harper\, Sam Grisman\, Jack Dwyer\, Love Canon\, Tristan and Tashina Clarridge\, and many more…\nNow\, he continues to teach privately\, while also teaching at Lewis & Clark College. Luke is passionate about passing on the Old fiddling traditions\, and also creating new music measured with taste\, technical control\, and joy. \nAvoid the crowds and parking hassles of other areas on the Westside. Parking is free for one hour (2 hours with festival validation) in designated structures in downtown Culver City\, and dozens of dining options are available within walking distance. SUMMARY:Culver City's Boulevard Music Summer Festival w Brenda Lee Eager
DESCRIPTION:Summer breezes… an intimate courtyard… free parking… and great music. Escape to Culver City for the 2018 Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival. Tickets may be purchased at Boulevard Music in person or over the phone and probably will not be available online. \nTonight we feature Brenda Lee Eager and her R&B soul review. \nFrom the farm county of Lower Peachtree\, North of Mobile Alabama\, you might not expect a chart-topping musical powerhouse to emerge\, and yet Brenda Lee Eager did just that. Beyond her original songs recorded by Aretha Franklin\, Ray Charles and Prince\, Brenda has a heart and voice as big as the world – having performed with the most important artists in American music history: Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross\, Donny Hathaway\, Roberta Flack\, Graham Nash and the inimitable Ray Charles. \nBrenda started her singing career like so many other greats: in church. Having established a secure partnership between her music and her spiritual path\, she moved to Chicago landing the coveted female lead with Jerry Butler’s group (Motown)\, and was later co-featured with Jerry in his famous Billboard “Certified Gold” hits: “Ain’t Understanding Mellow” and “(They Long To Be) Close To You.” \nBut these accolades are a small part of what makes Brenda such a powerful writer and lyricist. Brenda inherently understands the relationship between storytelling and the song. Every song she creates retains a compelling sense of narrative – never losing sight of a deep humanity encapsulated in the melody and lyric. \nHaving penned several one-woman and theatrical shows of her own\, Brenda is no stranger to the theater and has joined forces with Catherine Kinsman and Ben Dowling to write the musical Spiral—a powerful story that addresses human civilization and its relationship with nature and indigenous cultures around the world. \n“Music is central to my life. It’s between God and music – and a lot of the time I consider those two words to be nearly interchangeable. My music is a reflection of the spiritual lessons that I practice in my life. I can’t think of a better place to speak from\, as we face profound issues\, than through our collective voice and stories of magic\, of vision and of love.” \nAvoid the crowds and parking hassles of other areas on the Westside. SUMMARY:EJ MATHEWS BAND—CD RELEASE OF CHAPTER 3
DESCRIPTION:EJ Mathews 2017 Breakout Artist of the Year—Living Blues\, Magazine. CD RELEASE OF CHAPTER 3\n \nEvery once in a blue moon someone comes out with a song that makes you take notice. Not only did he come with a song\, but he also made a video to go along with it. Texas born E.J. Mathews\, originally from Atlanta\, Texas now makes his home in Dallas. Mathews lived just outside Atlanta\, Texas in the small rural community of Bivins\, Texas. Located near Leek Creek and the Louisiana state line he got his musical influence from his grandfather who was from south Georgia. Mathews recalls his “granddaddy Zan used to sit on the front porch at night and play slide guitar with his pocket knife\, all the while spitting watermelon seeds off the porch and watching lightnin’ bugs flicker in the night.”\nHis granddaddy loved listening to country and blues and Mathews says his musical style is somewhere in the middle\, a little bit of the blues\, with a touch of some country mixed in.\nI don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.\nHe said he wants to tell a story through his music his way and that’s the same philosophy he uses when writing a song such as “Down On The Creek (Ford Pickup).”\nMathews says he has over a hundred songs he has written and has been told by some people his music sounds like swamp boogie and country blues. Mathews says “It’s just me\, my kind of music.”\n“I don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.”His parents divorced years ago and so he moved to Oklahoma for a spell where he graduated school and then headed back to the great state of Texas. Mathews worked as a truck driver for years and now works in education in Desoto\, Texas. But Mathews lifelong dream of being a musician still keeps calling.\n“So I say\, I will continue to give this music thing a shot and see where it leads me.”\nA devoted family man first and staunch Christian\, the dream has just begun for the E.J. Mathews Band. \nhttp://ejmathews.com \n$15.00Read more

SUMMARY:TRACY NEWMAN PLUS ART PODELL
DESCRIPTION:Picture a scrawny fourteen-year-old girl sitting on a diving board over an empty pool on an overcast day\, strumming the same four chords over and over again\, on her brother’s cheap acoustic guitar. That’s Tracy Newman\, but that’s not how she sees herself. From Tracy’s POV\, the pool is full and clear blue\, it’s a bright sunny LA day\, and her brother’s guitar is the best guitar in the world! That kind of sums up singer/songwriter Tracy Newman’s body of work to date. There are some genuinely happy songs in the mix\, but overall\, if you really listen you will hear the truth. “A Place in the Sun” is great traveling music\, and you can’t help but smile and sing along\, then it hits you: Wow\, there’s more to this than meets the ear. “I Just See You” will make you cry for the beauty of what didn’t realize you had. “That’s What Love Can Do to Your Heart” will drag you kicking and screaming through the carefree beginning to the bitter end of your most memorable love affair. You will not be able to get these songs out of your mind. \nTracy is a founding member of the LA based improv group\, The Groundlings\, which over the years has became the farm company for SNL. She began writing TV comedy in 1990 with writing partner\, Jonathan Stark. Their first gig was Cheers\, then Bob\, The Nanny\, Ellen and The Drew Carey Show. In 1997\, they won an Emmy and Peabody Award for writing the groundbreaking “coming out” episode of Ellen. In 2001\, they created the ABC comedy\, According to Jim\, which ran for eight seasons. Tracy is back to music now\, full time. \n\nPLUS ON THE SAME BILL—ART PODELL\nHad Art Podell kept a diary\, it would have been a rich chronicle of the life of a folksinger during the Folk Era and as a songwriter in the years since\, spiced with a healthy serving of laughter. Unfortunately\, he didn’t. Instead\, at the coaxing of friends and former folkies\, he is spilling the beans on stage. He began in Greenwich Village with friend and fellow musician\, Paul Potash. Art and Paul released two albums on Columbia Records. The first — “Songs of Earth and Sky” — is considered a folk classic and is rumored to have influenced the early recordings of another “Art and Paul” (Garfunkel and Simon). (Begrudgingly\, Art finally admitted last year that they were “pretty good.”) In the Village\, Peter Yarrow\, their friend\, shared a new song with them called “Puff\, the Magic Dragon” and it was Art and Paul who first recorded the song in 1961 — well over a year before Peter\, Paul and Mary’s version. In 1961\, the boys headed west to the L.A. folk scene. “We were so successful\,” Art remembers while scratching his head\, “we broke up.” Art turned to songwriting. In short order\, he had songs recorded by Rod McKuen\, The Smothers Brothers\, Glenn Yarbrough\, Joe and Eddie\, Bud and Travis\, Barry and Barry\, and\, eventually\, The New Christy Minstrels\, whom he joined as one of the original members in 1962 until 1966. Quite a ride — from the Troubadour to Carnegie Hall in less than six months…national TV\, college concerts\, European tours\, and performances at the White House. Art co-wrote the title song for Ann Murray’s Christmas album\, ‘Christmas Wishes’.Art continues to write and perform and hosts a bi-monthly segment of “Roots Music and Beyond” on KPFK 90.7FM – Los Angeles\, a Pacifica Station in Los Angeles. His new CD\, ‘From The Village To The Canyon’ was recently featured in an exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles featuring the music of Laurel Canyon. \n“Art Podell presents an evening of music\, laughter\, songs\, stories and memories shared through his signature story/songs. He sometimes divulges a few secrets about friends — famous and not. (Consequently\, he is currently looking for a qualified bodyguard – preferably one who plays banjo \nhttps://tracynewman.com \nhttp://artpodell.com/ \n$15.00Read more
