SUMMARY:TEJA GERKEN & MARK LEGGETT
DESCRIPTION:Two fabulous fingerstyle players with an array of styles on the same bill. One a multi stylist with celtic\, classical\, and jazz influences and the other a fabulous fingerstyle/slide guitarist who melds the two seamlessly into fantastic arrangements. \nSan Francisco Bay Area guitarist Teja Gerken has enchanted audiences ever since coming onto the acoustic fingerstyle scene in the late 1990s. Initially influenced by guitarists such as John Renbourn\, Michael Hedges\, and Leo Kottke\, Teja ultimately began weaving together his diverse musical interest into a style that is his own\, releasing his debut album On My Way in 1999. In the two decades since\, Teja has fine-tuned his sets to include original compositions\, Celtic traditionals\, classical pieces\, jazz standards\, and some favorite tunes by his fingerstyle guitar peers\, several of which are included on 2005’s Postcards. Teja’s latest release is 2024’s Test of Time\, the opening track of which\, “Vicki’s Red Boots\,” was a finalist for the 2024 USA Songwriting Award. Teja also recorded also a duo recording with fellow Bay Area guitarist Doug Young\, with whom he released 2020’s Duets\, and 2025’s The Water is Wide.\n“Test of Time” is a sonic marvel from top to bottom\n– Blair Jackson\, Acoustic Guitar \nGerken’s technical facility is obvious\, his performances impeccable\, and his tones gorgeous\n– Barry Cleveland\, guitarplayer.com. \nPlus on the same bill Mark Leggett\, an artist who spends most of his time doing film scoring\, making a rare appearance performing his original tunes and arrangements. Mark will be playing his fingestyle/slide arrangements of original and classic tunes. Twice Emmy nominated for his composing work\, Mark has written music for Levon Helm and The Band\, Dolly Parton’s films\, the tv show My Name is Earl\, and many others. We had seen Mark perform at the Wiltern Theatre opening the show performing 3 songs solo for a screening of Easy Rider done with a fabulous live band performing the original songs and incidental music accompanying the dialogue instead of the pre-recorded original songs and music. Mark’s arrangements of the three songs lead to the inevitable\, this guy needs to be heard and discovered by more people. A fantastic tasteful player. Don’t  miss him. \nhttps://www.tejagerken.com \nhttps://www.markleggett.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:TERESA JAMES & BRUCE FORMAN
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we feature two artists at the top of their game in a rare performance together.\nOne virtuoso vocalist and one virutoso guitarist making more music together than one person might imagine. Teresa James on vocals and Bruce Forman on guitar. \nTeresa James\nHer persuasive pipes slathered in honey and soaked in Texas-bred sass\, keyboardist Teresa James and her band\, the Rhythm Tramps (12 albums done to date)\, have long reigned as one of Los Angeles’ leading contemporary blues outfits. Their 2019 CD Here in Babylon was nominated for a Grammy in the Contemporary Blues Album category. Known to many people for her work in the world of Blues her repertoire goes way beyond the standard 12 bar blues progressions. Everything from Texas-style grease and blues into Memphis soul or New Orleans-flavored grooves and all points in between with fun and abandonment\nHer diversifed career has included recordings with Walter Trout\, Eric Burdon\, Spencer Davis\, Tommy Castro\, Stephen Bruton\, Randy Newman\, LeeRoy Parnell\, Neil Diamond\, and more; plus live performances with countless others\, including Marcia Ball\, Levon Helm\, Lloyd Jones\, Delbert McClinton\, and Eric Burdon & the Animals. She has been a featured act on Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beaches Cruises for more than twenty years. Bruce also pointed out that Teresa is also Bonnie Raitt’s favorite singer which is not a bad credit to add to anyone’s resume. \nBruce Forman \nA hectic touring schedule; eighteen recordings as a leader\, including his newest release\, Junkyard Duo; countless sideman recordings including Ray Brown\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Roger Kellaway; soundtrack performances on three of Clint Eastwood’s distinguished films—most notably Academy Award-winning Million Dollar Baby; producer\, arranger\, acclaimed educator\, in residence at USC’s Studio/Jazz Guitar Dept.\, when does Bruce Forman rest? \nDeep immersion in American culture inspires Forman to contribute to the traditions that he drew from. Formanism (his trio project); original works like The Red Guitar; his popular podcast with Scott Henderson\, GuitarWank; Cow Bop and the “road challenges” down historic byways like Route 66; JazzMasters Workshop; his newest project: Junkyard Duo…these are only the latest answers to the endless question that underlies Bruce Forman’s creativity. His music and life reflect every step of his journey\, and demonstrate the awareness of an artist who’s very much at home in the world\, and at the top of his form.\n“A rock solid jazz/bebop player with a harmonic knowledge in his playing which is brilliant. One of the few really great jazz players out there whose playing sounds classic.”—Gary Mandell \nhttps://teresajames.com/ \nhttps://www.bruceforman.com/ \nRead more

SUMMARY:THE TRANSATLANTIC TRIO—RICHARD SMITH\, JOSCHO STEPHAN\, & RORY HOFFMAN
DESCRIPTION:The Transatlantic Guitar Trio features Richard Smith from the U.K.\, Germany’s Joscho Stephan and American multi-instrumentalist Rory Hoffman. Together they combine jazz ballads\, gypsy swing standards\, Travis/Chet Atkins picking\, pop music plus some original compositions to create a repertoire of fresh arrangements in the styles of the great guitarists Django Reinhardt\, Chet Atkins\, Jerry Reed\, and Merle Travis. \nThe history of these incredible players includes these brief descriptions:\nRichard Smith is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. Incredible fingerstyle player (2001 National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion) and\, also\, one of the hottest Bebop/Django/Flatpicking players in the world. Richard Smith performs everything from fingerpicking classics\, originals\, Joplin rags\, jazz standards\, classical and everything from pop to Sousa marches. The playing ranges from amazing to flashy and beautiful. Here are a couple of quotes regarding Richard from Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. “The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know\, only better.” Chet Atkins\, CGP \nJoscho Stephan shapes modern gypsy swing with his playing like no other: With his authentic tone\, his harmonic finesse and his sense of rhythm\, but above all with his breathtaking solo technique\, Stephan has earned himself an outstanding reputation on the international guitar scene. Like no other\, he knows how to stand out from the multitude of current Gypsy Swing adaptations by combining Gypsy Swing with Latin\, Classical and Rock\, in addition to numerous interpretations of the well-known classics of the genre. His debut album ‘Swinging Strings’ was voted CD of the month in 1999 by Guitar Player magazine. In 2004\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine celebrated Joscho Stephan as the future of gypsy jazz guitar. For the CD “Guitar Heroes” in 2015\, Joscho Stephan invited guitar greats like Bireli Lagrène\, Stochelo Rosenberg and Tommy Emmanuel. \nRory Hoffman started teaching himself to play guitar and piano at age 3. By age 5 he was the drummer in the family band. He currently plays over a dozen stringed\, keyboard and wind instruments. Rory has played the Grand Ole Opry numerous times\, as a soloist and as a sideman with Ricky Skaggs\, Kathy Mattea and John Cowan. Working with these stars and others has enabled him to play several notable festivals\, including Telluride with John Cowan\, and Djangofest as part of the John Jorgenson quintet. “Just Jazz Guitar” and “Guitar Player” magazines have written feature articles about Hoffman’s unique guitar style. Rory is 2-time winner of Musician of the Year from Nashville’s ICMA\, and is a 2012 inductee into the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame. Tour de Fourth is Rory’s latest album. Rather than focus on a certain style of music\, this album features music that demonstrates Rory’s skill and diverse interests in country\, western swing\, jazz\, polka\, latin\, gypsy jazz\, bluegrass and gospel music. It is a mix of original songs\, and fresh arrangements of standards. \nhttps://www.richardsmithmusic.com/ \nhttps://joscho-stephan.de/en \nhttps://www.roryhoffman.com/ \nRead more

SUMMARY:Guy Van Duser & Billy Novick Celebrating 50 Years Performing Together
DESCRIPTION:“Guy…has practically invented a finger-picked guitar style\, closer to jazz piano than guitar. Billy Novick\, on clarinet\, had he lived in the 30’s would be a legend….”Boston Globe \nAbout this Show: This is our 25th anniversary show (A little bit late but we finally pulled it off). Guy Van Duser was the first artist we called to play Boulevard Music in 1998. Why\, because his fingerstyle arrangements are inventive\, beautiful\, and like nobody else. This ultimately led to the album Guy Van Duser Live at Boulevard Music which is a classic recording with fabulous playing and amazing arrangements by Guy. This is the first time we are able to have his long time partner of 50 years\, Billy Novick\, make the journey from Boston with Guy to play at the Boulevard. Don’t miss these two masters of their instruments for the first time together on the West Coast.—Gary Mandell \nAbout the Artists: \n“Elegant.” “Riveting.” “Soulful.” “Classic mastery.” These are a few of the terms that have been used to describe the unique and stunning swing-jazz music of acoustic guitarist Guy Van Duser and clarinetist Billy Novick. \nTogether as a duo going strong into their 50th year together – longer than most marriages- Guy and Billy have performed in concerts\, clubs and festivals all over North America and Europe. \nAnd like a good marriage\, their music has wed together two perfectly suited musical personalities. You may have heard them as frequent guests of the Prairie Home Companion show (6 times!!)\, providing theme songs for the PBS shows This Old House and Antiques Roadshow (that’s them playing the theme and more)\, NPR’s All Things Considered\, or on one of the numerous film and television soundtracks they have been featured on. Their music is based around Guy’s innovative finger-style guitar wizardry\, playing bass\, chords and melodies all at the same time. His inspiring imagination and virtuosity are perfectly complemented by Novick’s soulful and lyrical clarinet playing. Deeply rooted in the rich legacy of the classic jazz age and buoyed by their entertaining and humorous stage manner\, the “two-man big band” can play a Gershwin song or an old blues and immediately have it sound fresh and unique. \nWith his daring imagination\, breathtaking technique\, and his wonderful musicality\, Guy has become an inspiration for guitarists all over the world. To some guitarists\, Guy Van Duser is known only as “that guy who arranged Stars and Stripes Forever for Chet Atkins.” Chet thought Guy’s version was so great he paid him to fly to Nashville to it teach to him\, which he did in Chet’s kitchen. Mr. modest Van Duser\, is also head of fingerstyle guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, and boy are they lucky to have him as a professor. \nNovick’s ever-inventive and soulful clarinet playing provides the ideal complement to Guy’s guitar. Their music sounds fresh and original\, yet is also deeply rooted in the rich legacy of the classic jazz age. The duo can play any piece from their huge repertoire- an obscure Ellington tune\, a Gershwin classic\, or perhaps one of the their originals- and immediately have it sound their own. \nThe two of them together can create a pulse as driving as any big band\, and they have a musical telepathy and understanding that has been honed by fifty years of playing together. Add to all of this their relaxed and engaging stage manner\, and you will be treated to a musically enchanting and entertaining show that\, indeed\, has already stood the test of time. \n“…a sound so full that it’s hard to believe only two people hold the stage.” \nCalgary Herald \n“They’ll stun you with the mastery of their playing…” \nBirmingham (Ala.) John’s solo sets are known for their authenticity\, warmth\, and connection. Don’t miss this chance to experience one of Southern California’s finest Americana voices up close and personal.\nKen Holme writes songs inhabited by large cats\, yappy dogs\, future newlyweds\, exlovers\, and the temporarily confused.Peter Krantz\, of the Camarillo Café Music Series says: “Ken Holme writes some marvelously quirky songs\, and delivers them earnestly\, in a sometimes humorous\, sometimes poignant style. SUMMARY:EJ MATHEWS BAND
DESCRIPTION:Every once in a blue moon someone comes out with a song that makes you take notice. That’s EJ Mathews the 2017 Breakout Artist of the Year in Living Blues Magazine. Not only did he come with a song\, but he also made a video to go along with it. Texas born E.J. Mathews\, originally from Atlanta\, Texas now makes his home in Dallas. Mathews lived just outside Atlanta\, Texas in the small rural community of Bivins\, Texas. Located near Leek Creek and the Louisiana state line he got his musical influence from his grandfather who was from south Georgia. Mathews recalls his “granddaddy Zan used to sit on the front porch at night and play slide guitar with his pocket knife\, all the while spitting watermelon seeds off the porch and watching lightnin’ bugs flicker in the night.”\nHis granddaddy loved listening to country and blues and Mathews says his musical style is somewhere in the middle\, a little bit of the blues\, with a touch of some country mixed in.\nHe said he wants to tell a story through his music his way and that’s the same philosophy he uses when writing a song such as “Down On The Creek (Ford Pickup).”\nMathews says he has over a hundred songs he has written and has been told by some people his music sounds like swamp boogie and country blues. Mathews says “It’s just me\, my kind of music.”\n“I don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.”His parents divorced years ago and so he moved to Oklahoma for a spell where he graduated school and then headed back to the great state of Texas. Mathews worked as a truck driver for years and now works in education in Desoto\, Texas. But Mathews lifelong dream of being a musician still keeps calling.\n“So I say\, I will continue to give this music thing a shot and see where it leads me.”\nA devoted family man first and staunch Christian\, the dream has just begun for the E.J. Mathews Band. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/TheRealEJMathews/ \nRead more

SUMMARY:TANNAHILL WEAVERS
DESCRIPTION:Born of a 1968 session in Paisley\, Scotland and named for the town’s historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill\, the Tannahill Weavers have made an international name for their special brand of Scottish music\, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. The Tannahills began to attract attention when founding members Roy Gullane and Phil Smillie added the full- sized highland bagpipes to the on-stage presentations\, the first professional Scottish folk group to successfully do so. The combination of the powerful pipe solos\, Roy’s driving guitar backing and lead vocals\, and Phil’s ethereal flute playing breathed new life into Scotland’s vast repertoire of traditional melodies and songs.Three years and a dozen countries later\, the Tannahills were the toast of Europe\, having won the Scotstar Award for Folk Record of the Year with their third album\, The Tannahill Weavers. Canada came the next summer\, with thousands at the national festivals in Vancouver\, Winnipeg and Toronto screaming an approval that echoed throughout the Canadian media. The Regina Leader-Post wrote\, “The Tannahill Weavers personify Celtic music\, and if you are given to superlatives\, you have to call their talent ‘awesome’.” Since their first visit to the United States\, the Tannahills’ unique combination of traditional melodies on pipes\, flute and fiddle\, driving rhythms on guitar and bouzouki\, and powerful three and four part vocal harmonies have taken the musical community by storm. As Garrison Keillor\, then host of “A Prairie Home Companion”\, remarked\, “These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the States”. The Tannahills have turned their acoustic excitement loose on audiences with an electrifying effect. They have that unique combination of traditional melodies\, driving rhythmic accompaniment\, and rich vocals that make their performances unforgettable. As the Winnipeg Free Press noted\, “The Tannahill Weavers – properly harnessed – could probably power an entire city for a year on the strength of last night’s concert alone. The music may be old time Celtic\, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.” \nOver the years the Tannies have been trailblazers for Scottish music\, and their tight harmonies and powerful\, inventive arrangements have won them fans from beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes. In 2011 the band was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame\, and in 2018 they released their highly acclaimed 50th Anniversary album Òrach (“Golden” in Gaelic) on award-winning label Compass Records.\nRecent years have seen an exciting change to the band line-up\, with the addition on bagpipes and fiddle of Scotland’s youngest Clan leader\, Iain MacGillivray. Iain speaks (and sings) Gaelic fluently and has performed on such high profile projects as Outlander and with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas amongst many others. With Iain\, Roy\, Phil\, and fiddle and bouzouki player Malcolm Bushby\, the Tannahill Weavers are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage. Their latest recording Solstice is scheduled for release in October of 2024. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs\, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. \nhttps://tannahillweavers.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:TONY McMANUS
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by John Renbourn as ‘the best Celtic guitarist in the world’ Tony McManus has also been listed as one of the 50 transcendent guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. Tony has both extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music. Ranked by peers and predecessors alike alongside the guitar world’s all-time greats\, his fiendishly dexterous\, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic world\, along with still further-ranging flavours such as jazz and eastern European music. Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose the delicate\, complex ornamentation characteristic of traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes – even the phrasing of a Gaelic song – onto his own six strings\, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other guitar genres.\nBorn in 1965 in Paisley\, near Glasgow\, McManus was introduced to traditional music via the family record collection. Having first tried his hand at the fiddle\, whistle and mandolin\, he took up the guitar aged ten\, although subsequent academic inclinations got him halfway through a PhD in maths before the music won out. After rapidly making his name as an unusually fluent and sensitive accompanist\, he took the solo plunge with a triumphant main-stage debut on the final night of Glasgow’s inaugural Celtic Connections festival in 1994\, supporting Capercaillie in front of a 2500-strong crowd.\nWith the loyal support of Greentrax Recordings in Scotland Tony’s first self-titled recording in 1996\, followed by Pourquoi Quebec in 1999 led to worldwide recognition. However\, it was with the release of Ceol More in 2002 that Tony’s stature as a first-class musician reached a new level. Having heard his session work on several albums\, Nashville based Compass Records released “Ceol More” in North America to universally ecstatic reviews. Critics hailed the focused\, spell-binding nature of the music\, from the plaintive Jewish hymn “Shalom Aleichem” to the ingenious arrangement of the Charles Mingus tune “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”. Having been nominated as Musician of the Year by both the BBC Folk Awards and The Scottish Traditional Music awards\, in 2002 “Ceol More” hit the Critic’s Album of the year list in Acoustic Guitar magazine and was named Live Ireland Awards’ Album of the Year. \nhttps://www.tonymcmanus.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:THE FOLK COLLECTION—SOLD OUT!!
DESCRIPTION:SORRY\, THIS SHOW HAS SOLD OUT.\nThe Folk Collection impresses audiences of all ages\, with set lists full of beloved songs like “This Land is Your Land\,” “Blowin’ in the Wind\,” “Greenback Dollar\,” and “City of New Orleans.” Renee Gaumond\, formerly of Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage Coffee House\, has said\, “The Folk Collection is a testament to the enduring quality of this upbeat and universal music\, and the best way to enjoy it is to sing and clap right along with them. Bring your kids\, because they’ll have a great time\, too.” In addition to performing several of their original songs\, The Folk Collection’s arrangement of a medley of TV western theme songs from the 50’s (including Bonanza\, Davy Crockett\, and Rawhide)\, is always one of the highlights of their show. \nIt all started in the mid 60’s\, when Hollywood High School buddies Ed Labowitz and Tony Unger performed in a local folk trio. After the military\, Tony was a touring musician and pop singer for 15 years. Ed went on to law school at Cal. Mike Sirota played folk songs as a camp counselor in Los Angeles and then graduated and received his teaching credential from Cal. Flash forward to the new century. After many years\, Ed and Tony put their old folk trio together\, only this time they added new friend\, Mike\, and The Folk Collection was formed. Their memorable three-part harmonies now bring family and friends together\, making even more merriment and memories. \nLabowitz is an L.A. entertainment lawyer\, Sirota serves as a cantorial soloist at two Southern California synagogues\, and Unger is the pastor of a church in Bishop\, California. Just like the folk songs they have performed around the country\, the magic lies within seemingly disparate elements coming together as one\, creating the unforgettable music that continues to shape our lives. \n“We grew up loving this sort of music\, and we’ve been thrilled by the amazing response to our shows from people of all ages who really get a kick out of joining in with the words and harmonies. The show is all about folk music and good clean jokes\,” says Labowitz. Unger adds\, “The Folk Collection provides one of those all-too-rare opportunities for family friendly fun. We get a real kick out of watching teenagers reluctantly coming to our gigs as a favor to a their mom and dad\, and then watching them walk out of there smiling and humming the tunes that we all love so much. No matter how different we may be\, the music never fails to bring us together.” \nhttp://www.thefolkcollection.com \nRead more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:DOUG MACLEOD
DESCRIPTION:MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting\, guitar wizardry\, warm soulful vocals\, wit\, and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance is his knack for storytelling\, bringing characters-from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life.\nDoug is a multiple Blues Music Award winner\, including the 2024 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Album Of The Year Raw Blues 1 and the 2023 the Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year.\nIn 2022 A SOUL TO CLAIM produced by Jim Gaines was released. It was named a Downbeat Magazine ‘Album Of The Year’ for 2022.\nDoug is an international touring artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters and carries forward a valuable tradition. As a youth\, Doug overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After picking up a guitar\, and singing he found his voice. MacLeod’s playing landed him sideman gigs with George ‘Harmonica’ Smith\, Big Joe Turner\, Pee Wee Crayton\, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson\, Lowell Fulson\,and Big Mama Thornton. Over 40 years\, 29 studio albums\, several live records\, compilations\, two blues guitar instructional DVDs\, and a live performance DVD\, MacLeod has consistently earned raves. His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King\, Albert Collins\, Joe Louis Walker and Eva Cassidy. MacLeod’s songs have been featured in many TV movies and the hit show In the Heat of the Night. August Wilson requested his soulful slide guitar playing in the Los Angeles opening of “Gem of the Ocean”.\nFrom 1999 to 2004 Doug hosted Nothin’ But The Blues\, a very popular weekend blues show on Los Angeles’ KLON-KKJZ. He has also been the voice for The Blues Showcase on Continental Airlines. For ten years he penned “Doug’s Back Porch\,” a regular feature column in Blues Revue Magazine in which he shared his humorous and insightful stories with thousands of readers. He is one of the four featured artists in the movie “Resonate: A Guitar Story”\, the feature documentary on the making of National Guitars.\nLike the old masters who taught him\, MacLeod’s music expresses life and times through an intangible\, elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. Doug’s music\, stories\, and philosophy provide a healing that has helped others overcome the hardships of their lives.\nDoug says the most important lessons he learned as a young musician came from Ernest Banks a one-eyed country bluesman from Toano\, VA. “Never play a note you don’t believe” and “Never write or sing about what you don’t know about.”\n“Like all great blues men\, MacLeod lives his music\, and the songs are not just on the tips of his fingers and tongue\, they are one with his being.”- Blues Music Magazine\n“One of the great blues artists… Period!”- Jorma Kaukonen. \nhttps://www.doug-macleod.com \nRead more
