DESCRIPTION:EJ Mathews 2017 Breakout Artist of the Year—Living Blues\, Magazine.  \nEvery once in a blue moon someone comes out with a song that makes you take notice. Not only did he come with a song\, but he also made a video to go along with it. Texas born E.J. Mathews\, originally from Atlanta\, Texas now makes his home in Dallas. Mathews lived just outside Atlanta\, Texas in the small rural community of Bivins\, Texas. Located near Leek Creek and the Louisiana state line he got his musical influence from his grandfather who was from south Georgia.  Mathews recalls his “granddaddy Zan used to sit on the front porch at night and play slide guitar with his pocket knife\, all the while spitting watermelon seeds off the porch and watching lightnin’ bugs flicker in the night.”\nHis granddaddy loved listening to country and blues and Mathews says his musical style is somewhere in the middle\, a little bit of the blues\, with a touch of some country mixed in.\nI don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.\nHe said he wants to tell a story through his music his way and that’s the same philosophy he uses when writing a song such as “Down On The Creek (Ford Pickup).”\nMathews says he has over a hundred songs he has written and has been told by some people his music sounds like swamp boogie and country blues. Mathews says “It’s just me\, my kind of music.”\n“I don’t want to sound like everybody else; I just want to be me. Grandaddy never played any cover tunes. There’s nothing wrong with it\, it’s just not me.”His parents divorced years ago and so he moved to Oklahoma for a spell where he graduated school and then headed back to the great state of Texas. Mathews worked as a truck driver for years and now works in education in Desoto\, Texas. But Mathews lifelong dream of being a musician still keeps calling.\n“So I say\, I will continue to  give this music thing a shot and see where it leads me.”\nA devoted family man first and staunch Christian\, the dream has just begun for the E.J. DESCRIPTION:The awesome blues\, rock\, jazz\, funk\, singer/songwriter who has  sung for Barbra Streisand’s wedding\, performed at countless functions for people such as Steven Spielberg\, Bruce Willis\,Aaron Spellings\,Brad Grey \,The Cast of The Soprano’s and the late Sonny Bono\, played harmonica and scat rapped alongside Salt n’ Pepa on Quincy Jones’ TV show “Vibe”\, and has had the likes of Bonnie Raitt\, Eddie Van Halen and Jerry Lee Lewis\, among countless others\, join him on-stage for impromptu jam sessions.\nPreston appeared on “The Tonight Show” along with the late Jimmy Stewart and released an album on Curb Records entitled “Preston Smith.” He was featured on the hit movie soundtrack “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise with the title song “Oh I Love You So\,” which he composed\, produced and performed. The soundtrack went on to sell over six million units foreign and domestically. He And Hisband performed on the hit TV show “StarSearch” …. Roseanne Cash then recorded his song “Black and White\,” which released as a single\, and  was a hit on the country radio charts and was included in her greatest hits CD which went on to sell gold. Preston’s latest CD’s “That Real Feel\,” “RomancingTheBlues” and “A Night Blooming Jazzman” and “Christmas Blues ” and his latest release “Blue Skies For A Rainy Day” all which he produced and released on his own abel many of which he played all the instruments himself or recorded live with his band in the studio\, they are all a mix of his own Orginals and a combination of many genres of the past. Their arrangements of traditional jigs and reels bring these dance tunes up to date with a driving\, hard-edged accent that always leaves audiences shouting for more.  \nThe California-based group has toured since 2000 as a multi-instrumental acoustic band\, releasing twelve CDs along the way. David has composed close to 200 traditional style tunes\, many of which have appeared on recordings\, independent films\, and television.  \nJohn Weed is a classically trained violinist who has spent the last 20 years immersed in various fiddle styles. John lived in Ireland in 2000 and taught fiddle workshops at the Flowing Tide International Music School in Doonbeg\, County Clare. He has honed his skills since\, attending the Frankie Kennedy Winter School in Dunlewey\, County Donegal where he studied with Ciaran O’Maonaigh and Dermot Mcloughlin. With an affinity for American fiddle styles\, John explores the connection between Irish\, Scottish\, and old time fiddle. \nVeteran picker Stuart Mason is known for his authentic vocals and nimble skill on guitar\, mandola\, and banjo. He has won awards for traditional singing (Goleta Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention)\, mandola (Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest)\, and songwriting (West Coast Songwriter’s Association). Stuart Mason has been collecting and performing traditional music for over 40 years. DESCRIPTION:Tom Corbett is a mandolin and guitar playing singer songwriter who has toured and recorded with some of the best musicians in the folk and roots musical world. He toured and recorded with The Acousticats which featured Phil Salazar and Cyrus Clarke (Cache Valley Drifters) which lead to him working with John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and The String Wizards. Corbett recorded several albums with John as well as the award winning DVD John McEuen & Jimmy Ibotson-Nitty Gritty Surround on AIX Records. During his stint with John he played and recorded with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, Jennifer Warnes\, Vassar Clements\, Laurie Lewis and John Sebastian. After working with John for several years Tom then toured with Robin and Linda Williams from Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion. One a “Slack Key” guitar specialist and the other a fabulous fingerstyle/slide guitarist who melds the two seamlessly into fantastic arrangements.  \nSlack Key” means that some of the strings on a guitar are slacked from standard tuning\, with the bass\, melody\, and improvisation played at the same time\, and is often played to accompany traditional dance or song. Many players use their own special tunings that often remain proprietary secrets. Tonights show will feature this unique and beautiful style of playing.\nJim “Kimo” West first visited Hana\, Maui in 1985\, after a long summer on the road as guitarist for famed musical satirist\, “Weird Al” Yankovic. As the sounds of Gabby Pahinui\, the Sons of Hawai’i\, Sonny Chillingworth\, The Sunday Manoa\, and others\, played on the turntable\, he jammed along for fun and relaxation. Already a devotee of open tunings\, he was immediately drawn to the gentle rhythms of ki ho ‘alu (slack key guitar) and soon began writing his own songs. The rich physical and cultural landscape of the Hana Coast has provided the inspiration for many of his compositions.\nWhile always retaining the heartfelt essence of traditional slack key\, Jim “Kimo” West brings much of his own musical heritage to his original ki ho’alu instrumentals. His style can best be described as “nahenahe”\, meaning “soft\, sweet or gentle voice”\, a fusion of old and new but still rooted deeply in tradition.\nJim lives in Los Angeles where he writes and produces music which has appeared in feature films and TV shows on all the major networks and cable channels.\n“Jim West’s new recording continues his Slack Key explorations in his unique and beautiful style\, and in various tunings\, including two of his own invention\, further accentuating his own sound”\n— George Winston. pianist/ guitarist \nPlus on the same bill Mark Leggett\, an artist who spends most of his time doing film scoring\, making a rare appearance performing his original tunes and arrangements. The four women who comprise this delightful Americana./Roots style band\,  have combined their diverse backgrounds and songwriting talents  to  form a sound that is as unique as it is captivating. You’ll hear beautiful three part vocal harmonies along with fine musicianship on violin\, guitar\, mandolin\, upright bass and banjo. Whether they’re performing an old blues\, an original swing tune or an Appalachian  style  murder ballad\,\nit’s all Americana…new and old at the same time\, and irresistible. \nSugar in the Gourd was selected as an official showcase band for the 2012 FAR West conference\, and have been playing consistently around the Los Angeles area in many of the top venues including McCabes \, The Coffee Gallery \,The Echo\, as well as  a four month residency  at The Witzend Live in Venice.  \nLisa Salloux : vocals \, mandolin\, guitar (and occasional bass)\, was  born into an entire  family who played bluegrass. She has been an accomplished musician \, songwriter and vocalist since she was a teenager. \nAubrey  Richmond : vocals and violin\, has  been performing professionally since she was a young girl. She has won  numerous championships over  the years\, as well as maintaining a highly successful international career  as a top studio and touring musician.   \nCarly Ritter: vocals and guitar\, Our newest “Gourd”is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2013 by Vanguard Records. Most recently\, she recorded an album covering old cowboy and country songs (yet to be released) as a tip of the hat to her grandfather\, Tex Ritter. \nLynn Shipley Sokolow : upright bass and banjo\, is also a published poet and  lyricist\, selling over half a million records. In addition\, she is a former entertainment manager who has worked with Geffen recording artists Quarterflash and Berlin\,  and has  several gold and platinum albums on her wall.. \nPlus on the same bill and opening the show Nettie Rose Freed who is a Santa Monica native who  paints pictures of love\, renegades and vagabonds in her lyrical\, folk inspired music. Her influences range from 50’s-60’s pop to Townes van Zandt and Dylan\, and the Sons of the Pioneers. She learned to play guitar as a kid from renowned teacher and guitarist Fred Sokolow and soon they had completed a vast catalog of original songs. Her Straight Shooters have included Fred’s wife Lynn Shipley Sokolow on banjo or bass\, Johnny “Spazz” Hatton’s stand-up bass\, among other players in Nashville\, TN. Nettie is the granddaughter of Disc-Jockey Alan Freed (credited for coining the phrase “Rock ‘n Roll”) and grew up around the music business in Los Angeles\, in love with vintage music and the classics. Her debut LP “People I Know” is currently on iTunes and she is working on her sophomore release. Plus Fred Sokolow a master of several stringed instruments\, and who has recorded countless CDs and written numerous instruction books\, from rock to bluegrass to jazz. Lee played regularly with The Everly Brothers for over 20 years. Starting in 1972\, Lee worked for five years with Eric Clapton\, playing and singing for a live concert recording at the Budokan in Japan. In November 2002\, Albert Lee was among other world-class names appearing at the Royal Albert Hall in the “Concert for George\,” a tribute to George Harrison. Albert Lee appeared at the “2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival” and continues to work in the studio and tours on a regular basis with Bill Wyman’s (Rolling Stones) Rhythm Kings. \n“I remember going to see Albert around 1970 several times playing at the Sundance saloon in Calabasas.
