SUMMARY:DOUG MACLEOD & JESSE-CD RELEASE "BREAK THE CHAIN"
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we present a CD celebration of Doug MacLeod’s new album “Break the Chain”. Tonight Doug will also feature his son Jesse as part of the show with Jesse’s great original songs and performance. \nDoug MacLeod\, a prolific singer\, songwriter\, engaging storyteller\, and masterful guitarist was born in the blues and is rooted in the American tradition. MacLeod is a perennial Blues Music Award nominee and multiple Blues Music Award winner. He recently won the 2017 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year and the Blues Blast Music Award for Male Artist Of The Year. \n He is a traveling artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters\, lived the music\, and carries forward a valuable tradition. MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting\, guitar wizardry\, warm soulful vocals\, wit and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance is his knack for storytelling\, bringing characters-from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life. \n As a youth Doug overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After picking up a guitar\, and singing – he found his voice.  While he developed his rich\, soulful singing style MacLeod also worked out a unique\, unorthodox and powerfully rhythmic acoustic guitar style. The rage of a turbulent youth was eventually channeled through the guitar. Doug uses a relentless right hand to pound out an insistent\, churning beat to complement his intricate bottleneck and finger-style technique. \n MacLeod’s playing landed him sideman gigs with George ‘Harmonica’ Smith\, Big Joe Turner\, Pee Wee Crayton\, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson\, Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton. Over 29 years\, 20 studio albums\, several live records\, compilations\, a blues guitar instructional DVD and a live performance DVD\, MacLeod has consistently earned raves. His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King\, Albert Collins\, Joe Louis Walker and Eva Cassidy. He has co-written songs with Dave Alvin and Coco Montoya. MacLeod’s songs have been featured in many TV movies and the hit show In the Heat of the Night and on Grammy nominated albums by Albert King and Albert Collins. Doug’s soulful slide guitar playing was featured in the Los Angeles opening of August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean”. \n From 1999 to 2004 Doug hosted Nothin’ But The Blues\, a very popular weekend blues show on Los Angeles’ KLON-KKJZ. He has also been the voice for The Blues Showcase on Continental Airlines. For ten years he penned “Doug’s Back Porch\,” a regular feature column in Blues Revue Magazine in which he shared his humorous and insightful stories with thousands of readers. He is one of the four featured artists in the movie “Resonate: A Guitar Story”. A  feature documentary on the making of National Guitars. \n The much anticipated solo live album\, ‘DOUG MACLEOD – LIVE IN EUROPE’ \, was released on June 24\, 2016. \n In every note he performs and records\, MacLeod follows the rule-of-thumb he learned from country bluesman Ernest Banks of Toano VA.: \n“Never play a note you don’t believe”\, and “Never write or sing about what you don’t know about.” \n Like the old masters who taught him\, MacLeod’s music expresses life and times through an intangible\, elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. Doug’s music\, stories\, and philosophy provide a healing that has helped others overcome the hardships of their lives. \n As Pee Wee Crayton’s widow Esther once told Doug\, “You have a message and you’ll send that message mainly to the people who don’t go to church.” Amen.\nhttp://www.doug-macleod.com

SUMMARY:JOHN JORGENSON QUINTET LIVE AT BOULEVARD MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we present the John Jorgenson Quintet. Gypsy Jazz at its finest. \nThe John Jorgenson Quintet was originally formed in 2004 for the release of “Franco American Swing”. The Gypsy Jazz they perform reminds one of the string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1930’s Paris\, but Jorgenson’s compositions draw in elements from Latin\, Romanian\, Classical\, Rock and Greek music. Calling it “21st Century World Music” might be a better description. \nJohn Jorgenson born July 6\, 1956 in Madison\, Wisconsin\, is perhaps best known for his guitar work with bands such as the Desert Rose Band and The Hellecasters. Jorgenson is also proficient in the mandolin\, mandocello\, Dobro\, pedal steel\, piano\, upright bass\, clarinet\, bassoon\, and saxophone. John Jorgenson\, known for his blistering guitar and mandolin licks and mastery of a broad musical palette\, has earned a reputation as a world-class musician\, as evidenced by his collaborations with Earl Scruggs\, Bonnie Raitt\, Elton John\, Luciano Pavarotti\, Bob Dylan and many others. \nFirst coming to national attention in the mid ‘80s as co-founder of successful country-rock act The Desert Rose Band\, an eclectic array of artists such as Bonnie Raitt\, Bob Seger and Barbra were drawn to add Jorgenson’s artistry to their own recordings. While a member of the Desert Rose Band\, Jorgenson won the Academy of Country Music’s “Guitarist of the Year” award two consecutive years. \nIn the ‘90s The Hellecasters gave audiences a chance to experience John’s fretboard fireworks in an unrestrained venue and the trio’s three original albums remain favorites of guitarists everywhere. Having been a fan of the Desert Rose Band\, Elton John invited Jorgenson to join his band in 1994 for an 18 month tour that stretched into a six-year stint of touring\, recording and TV appearances with the British superstar\, in addition to collaborations with other artists including Sting and Billy Joel. \n2010 marked the 100th birthday of the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Since discovering Django in 1979\, Jorgenson has become “the US Ambassador of Gypsy Jazz” which is quite an honor given the distinctly European slant of the music’s heritage. Over the years Jorgenson has continued to honor the legacy of Reinhardt by bringing his unique brand of Gypsy Jazz to the masses with his John Jorgenson Quintet. \nJorgenson continues to expand his dynamic range of musical offerings\, exploring new elements of world music\, bluegrass\, rock and classical as he captivates and enlightens fellow musicians and listeners along the way. Touring with multiple musical configurations such as the John Jorgenson Quintet\, the John Jorgenson Electric Band\, the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band and the Desert Rose Band. Jorgenson annually plays dates across the U.S. and Europe. Each permutation allows him to make prodigious use of his mastery of many instruments; no matter which band Jorgenson is playing with\, his brilliant guitar work leads the way with music that is a combination of groundbreaking playing full of soaring melodies and driving rhythms. \nHis contribution is utterly one of a kind by not only Jorgenson’s skillful guitar playing\, but also his solo clarinet\, bouzouki\, and vocal performances as well. \nAt performances of the John Jorgenson Quintet\, audiences are awestruck by not only Jorgenson’s skillful guitar playing\, but the solo clarinet and bouzouki as well. Djangobooks perfectly articulates\, “If he comes around\, don’t miss him. The show is golden. The music soars.” \nLegends like Elton John\, Earl Scruggs and Duane Eddy along with fellow guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel\, Peter Frampton and Brad Paisley have sung Jorgenson’s praises\, and the best way to find out what they already know is to check out this artist who is leaving a lasting legacy in the art of guitar performance. \nHere’s what others have said about John Jorgenson: \n“Brilliant guitarist!” – ELTON JOHN \n“John Jorgenson is one of my most favorite players. He is incredibly versatile and his solos are unique and melodic\, played with amazing technique. ‘My  guitarist’s guitarist.” – PETER FRAMPTON \n“If there was one guitar player I’d like to be\, it would be John Jorgenson.” – BRAD PAISLEY \n“John Jorgenson is a true artiste. He’s a phenomenal musician.” – CHRIS HILLMAN \n“This is a display of virtuosity rarely rendered.” – FRETBOARD JOURNAL \n“John Jorgenson is one of the most respected guitarists in the world…” – LOS ANGELES TIMES \n“John Jorgenson has a rare kind of genius for an instrumentalist in that he’s equally comfortable and capable of playing Buck Owens\, Beatles riffs\, or jazz leads…” – NO DEPRESSION \nhttp://www.johnjorgenson.com

As the late great Clifton Chenier once said about Zydeco\, “if you dance\, your aches and pains will disappear.” Andre’s love of all things musical and his passion for playing for his audiences delight dancers and music lovers everywhere. \n  \nAndre Thierry is a phenomenal talent who has been capturing the attention of other musicians and music lovers since he was a toddler. Andre’s French Creole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana although he was born and reared in northern California. Michael Tisserand\, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco\, considered the definitive book on the history of Zydeco music\, wrote\, \n“Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the Gulf Coast\, and he combines youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition.” The San Francisco Bay Area\, which is home to some of the best blues musicians in the world\, showed its appreciation by presenting Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic with the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame award for “Best Zydeco Group” in 2008. Andre continually raises the bar for Zydeco musicians worldwide. At only 36 years old\, he is already a legend. There is widespread agreement that he is an exceptional multi-dimensional musician who has a finely-honed ability to merge traditional Zydeco music with hip-hop\, blues\, jazz and rock. Building from his love and respect for traditional Zydeco\, his original music is a blend of old and new. His musical mastery enables him to create a unique sound for his and future generations while staying true to the past. \nhttp://www.andrethierry.com \nCulver City’s Boulevard Music Festival is sponsored by The City of Culver City\, Sony Pictures Entertainment\, Boulevard Music\, Culver Studios\, John Riordan Plumbing\, Culver City Volvo & Mazda\, Maxam Properties\, Swiss Motors\, Sorrento Market\, Papa John’s Pizza\, D & E Associates\, Orchard Supply\, Mateo’s Ice Cream\, Hillside Memorial Park\, Cavanaugh Realty\, Dolce Realtors\, Marriott Hotel\, Michael Kayem Remax\, Public School 310\, Music Munchers\, Culver Hotel\, Dynagraphics\, Culver City News\, Culver City Observer\, Steeldeck Inc\, Eastman Guitars\, Kremona USA\, Ohana Ukuleles\, Ernie Ball and more to be confirmed soon as sponsorships are still available. SUMMARY:THE FOLK COLLECTION
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Collection takes you on a trip down memory lane in the footsteps of the Kingston Trio\, Peter\, Paul and Mary\, John Denver\, and the Limelighters with songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and the “MTA.”\nTHE FOLK COLLECTION could just as well be named the “Singing the Classic Songs of the ’60s Folk Era” group.  Tony Unger\, Ed Labowitz and Mike Sirota grew up in the 1960’s\, when they fell in love with the story songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era.  Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School\, and Mike joined the group in 2003. \nMuch of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages.  They have been influenced by the well-known groups of the era\, but they have their own blend\, sound – and humor.  Audiences get a real kick out of their unique medley arrangement of the great TV Western theme songs of the ’50s (including songs from the hit shows “Rawhide\,” Davy Crockett\,” “Maverick\,” and “Bonanza”). \nThe Folk Collection grew up loving folk music\, and the turnouts at their shows confirm that they have struck a “chord” with audiences of all ages\, who really like listening to the words and harmonies – and joining in when the mood and song fit.  Their show is centered around folk music and good clean jokes.  Their shows are family friendly\, and their audiences are often multi-generational – children\, parents\, grandparents\, and even great-grandparents – enjoying the music of The Folk Collection\, together.  Don’t miss an opportunity to share an evening withTHE FOLK COLLECTION.  You will leave singing\, toe-tapping\, and smiling.\nwww.thefolkcollection.com

Laurie Lewis and the Right hands were honored in 2016 by receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album. Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum\, who are featured in this group\, are widely regarded as being among the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time. Since forming a musical partnership in 1986\, when Tom first joined Laurie’s acclaimed band\, Grant Street\, between them they have recorded over 20 albums and performed around the globe. These Grammy-nominated artists (for their 1995 album The Oak and the Laurel) are widely regarded as among the leading lights of modern bluegrass and are highly-prized by their peers as sidemen and producers. International Bluegrass Music Association executive director Dan Hays calls Laurie “one of the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time.” Acclaimed musician Sam Bush puts it more simply\, calling her “a great singer\, terrific fiddle player\, fine songwriter\, and one very good band leader.” Laurie also performed on both the Grammy-award winning\, 1997 IBMA album of the year True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe\, and the Grammy-nominated Ralph Stanley & Friends’ release Clinch Mountain Country. Featuring Patrick Sauber on banjo & guitar and anything else that has strings on it\, Chad Manning superb fiddler and also member of the David Grisman band\, and Andrew Conklin known for turning heads with his inventive solos on upright bass. \n“It’s possible to be a strong female presence in the Bluegrass music world\, but you have to be really strong. Laurie is one of the greatest Bluegrass artists\, woman or man\, because of her consistency over decades\, the depth and width of her subject matter\, her commitment to the Bluegrass form\, and her technical command. Oh yes\, and her strength. Laurie’s strength manifests in many ways: her commanding presence on stage combined with an emotional vulnerability\, the truths in her lyrics\, her physical voice which transcends gender\, her strong commitment to causes and issues in which she deeply believes\, which all resonate with a respect for the land\, the natural world\, and human mercy and justice.” –– Darol Anger \n“A quintessential stylist who creates mandolin breaks with the same passion and precision Monet put into his brush strokes\, Tom Rozum ought to be recognized as a mandolinist of the first order.” –– Mandolin Magazine \nhttp://www.laurielewis.com \nCulver City’s Boulevard Music Festival is sponsored by The City of Culver City\, Sony Pictures Entertainment\, Boulevard Music\, Culver Studios\, John Riordan Plumbing\, Culver City Volvo & Mazda\, Maxam Properties\, Swiss Motors\, Sorrento Market\, Papa John’s Pizza\, D & E Associates\, Orchard Supply\, Mateo’s Ice Cream\, Hillside Memorial Park\, Cavanaugh Realty\, Dolce Realtors\, Marriott Hotel\, Michael Kayem Remax\, Public School 310\, Music Munchers\, Culver Hotel\, Dynagraphics\, Culver City News\, Culver City Observer\, Steeldeck Inc\, Eastman Guitars\, Kremona USA\, Ohana Ukuleles\, Ernie Ball and more to be confirmed soon as sponsorships are still available. SUMMARY:SUSIE GLAZE NEW FOLK ENSEMBLE + ROCKY NECK

The group has been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate\, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast\, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage\, The Broad Stage\, the Hollywood Bowl\, Palms Playhouse\, Don Quixote’s Music Hall\, Kuumbwa Jazz Center and CalTech Folk Music Society among others. Their CD “White Swan” was released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from No Depression\, FolkWorks\, Pop Matters\, M Magazine for Musicians\, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others\, and charted in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report’s Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart. Their new album “Not That Kind of Girl” produced by Herb Pedersen was released in June 2015 and is enjoying critical acclaim and radio airplay around the country. “If there were a word to describe this fine band\, it would be sophisticated. They draw influences from disparate sources to meld their sound. The level of musicianship is exemplary.… display a great range of prowess and work as a tight unit.” — Bluegrass Unlimited. “…one of the finest and most original Americana groups in California (or in the country for that matter).” No Depression. Augmenting their sound is the lush\, Celtic sounds of Rankin’s bouzouki\, the mountain sounds of Susie’s Appalachian dulcimer and traditional autoharp\, with Mark Indictor’s virtuoso fiddling and Fred Sanders’ remarkable bass work rounding out the orchestral nature of this amazing quartet. Susie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album “Dear Jean – Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie” alongside such artists as Judy Collins\, Pete Seeger\, Janis Ian\, Tim O’Brien\, John McCutcheon\, Robin and Linda Williams and many more. “The band is tight\, great picking\, and beautiful vocals and harmony.” KVMR\, Nevada City\, CA “She held the audience in the palm of her hand….” Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival “…does something with a song that only great singers can do…” KCSN\, Northridge\, CA “One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” KPFK’s FolkScene “…with people like this to trust\, my music will go on living\, and soaring. And so will I.” -Jean Ritchie \nPlus Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band the Southern California based group featuring Devitt Feeley\, and Craig Ferguson who got their start in the bluegrass music field by winning first place in the 2009 Topanga Banjo and Fiddle “Band Contest”. In January of 2012 they took first place in the California Bluegrass Association’s “Great 48 Showcase Showdown”\, competing against the top bluegrass bands from across the state. Their first recording\, “Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band” released in November of 2010\, was recorded in a 1920’s cabin in the mountain community of Big Bear\, CA\, and was mastered by legendary bluegrass engineer Billy Wolf in Arlington\, VA. Their bluegrass arrangement of Neil Young’s “Comes A Time” as well as the fresh arrangement of “Girl I Left Behind Me” have been receiving regular airplay on radio stations across the country. SUMMARY:MICHAEL CHAPDELAINE
DESCRIPTION:Michael Chapdelaine is the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world’s top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres; the Guitar Foundation of America International Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championships at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield \, Kansas. From New York’s Lincoln Center to the Cactus Cafe in Austin\, from Milano to Bangkok\, Michael continues to enchant\, dazzle and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique\, “soulful” expressiveness\, and versatility as a performer\, composer and arranger/producer. His performances\, played on both steel string and classical guitars\, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm n’ blues as he wins his audiences hearts with breath taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes. In the 80’s and 90’s Michael proved himself to be one of the world’s finest classical guitarists; twice winning the coveted National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant\, and taking First Prize in both the Guitar Foundation of America’s and the Music Teachers National Association’s Guitar Competitions. He also won the Silver Medal in Venezuela’s VIII Concurso International de Guitarra “Alirio Diaz”. He has toured four continents while giving hundreds of performances for Affiliate Artists Inc.\, and various arts promotion organizations. In 1992 he recorded the Sonata Romantica CD\, (now re-released as “Mexico”)\, which many critics and connoisseurs of classical guitar consider to be one of the definitive recordings for the instrument. Acoustic Guitar magazine wrote “… if I were marooned on a desert island with a limited selection of recordings\, this one would be among my choices…I have seldom heard a more beautiful album. Other young guitarists have excellent technique\, but few have such style and musicality\, and Chapdelaine’s beautiful tone is the nearest to Segovia’s that I can recall.” In 1994 Michael turned his attention to pop music\, in arranging\, producing and recording Time-Life Music’s beautiful Guitar by Moonlight collection (also released as “with love”)\, which sold 250\,000 copies in it’s first two years in the stores. In 1998\, he once again\, expanded his musical range and gained instant notoriety and credibility in the “acoustic music” world as a “fingerstyle” guitarist and composer\, by winning the National Fingerpicking Championships at Winfield. Michael is Professor of Music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico\, and has previously been on the faculties of the University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University. He has given master classes throughout the world including\, China\, Thailand\, Malaysia\, Peru\, Venezuela\, Taiwan\, Indonesia and at institutions such as\, University of Miami\, Mannes School of Music\, University of Texas\, and California State University. His teachers included the great Spanish maestro Andres Segovia.  \nhttp://www.michaelchapdelaine.com

SUMMARY:BERNIE PEARL with MIKE BARRY
DESCRIPTION:The blues is life itself to Bernie Pearl. A guitarist with an upbeat\, finger-poppin’ picking style he learned at the elbows of bluesmasters Sam ‘Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Mance Lipscomb\, Mississippi Fred MacDowell\, and others. Yet\, Bernie Pearl is no hidebound traditionalist. As music critics and aficionados have said for years\, he is a craftsman who packs his songs with melodic interpretations that are new and personal each time he picks up his vintage Martin or National. To hear him tell it\, “I’m not a retro player. I’m playing real blues for right now.” \nBernie\, who grew up in the Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights\, took up the guitar in the 1950’s. Later\, at his brother’s legendary blues showcase\, the Ash Grove\, he met\, studied with\, and often performed with greats like Hopkins\, Lipscomb\, and MacDowell as well as with Freddie King\, Albert Collins\, and Big Mama Thornton. Bernie played duets with John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village. “They were my teachers\,” he says\, “and it wasn’t just music they were teaching. If you took Mance or Lightnin’ out fishing you got philosophy\, history\, and lessons in life”. \nArmed with the teachings of those and other blues icons\, Bernie raises the roof with dazzling guitar solos – acoustic and electric – and with his own Bernie Pearl Blues Band\, which has backed the likes of B.B. King\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Willie Dixon\, and Big Joe Turner. The Bernie Pearl Blues Band has been a popular draw at many of Southern California’s best-known musical haunts: the House of Blues\, California Plaza Presents\, the Blue Café\, Disney’s California Adventure\, and the Playboy Pasadena Community Jazz Festival. Bernie has appeared at major Festivals in Chicago\, The Poconos\, Vancouver\, Portland\, and Long Beach\, as well as in Europe. \nA life-long blues evangelist\, Bernie began broadcasting Nothin’ But the Blues on KPPC FM in 1968\, making him L.A.’s first all-blues FM disc jockey. He went on to host the blues on KLON and KCRW from 1980-92\, helping found the Long Beach Blues Festival along the way. \nHis 15-year relationship with Louisiana blues man Harmonica Fats produced three outstanding CDs\, with the unplugged Two Heads Are Better and Blow\, Fat Daddy\, Blow\, each garnering W.C. Handy nominations in the mid-1990’s. Tonight Pearl shares the stage with bassist/producer Mike Barry who is a perfect match to set the groove for the tunes they perform. \nBernie applied his studio skills as a producer and songwriter-arranger of jazz-rocking violin pioneer Papa John Creach’s critically-acclaimed 1992 Papa Blues CD (Bee Bump BBCD 03). \nAs president of Big Time Blues Productions\, Pearl was named national “Blues Promoter of the Year” by the Blues Foundation in 1987\, and he continues to book\, promote\, advertise\, and oversee blues acts at annual events such as the Big Time Blues Festival and the Blues Harmonica Blowdown. He has taught blues history and blues guitar courses at several area universities\, and continues to teach at Cal State Long Beach\, as well as privately. \nHis first solo CD\, released in August 2002\, was recorded in an all-acoustic concert at Culver City’s Boulevard Music and is appropriately titled Bernie Pearl Live From Boulevard Music (Major Label ML 011-CD). \nFor music lovers tired of market-tested commercial radio and industry-buffed overnight phenoms\, Pearl provides virtuosity\, country wisdom\, a warm voice\, and the kind of fingerpicking and slide guitar work that still gets juke-joints jumping. \n“…Pearl’s music and voice evoke the unpretentious\, truth-telling qualities of the blues. The sparse arrangements that grace this 15-song set only heighten the soulful and spiritual nature of the music. Pearl’s guitar virtuosity is evident\, whether he’s playing lead\, rhythm\, or slide guitar…his version of (Son House’s) Shetland Pony Blues would make the old master proud” \nStephen A. King\, Living Blues Magazine \n“Making blues music draws from someplace deep\,” he says. “I’m lucky. It’s what I do.”\nhttp://www.berniepearl.com

SUMMARY:RICK RUSKIN & WORKSHOP ALSO
DESCRIPTION:“…so brilliant at times that he seems to transcend normal approaches to the guitar….Ruskin may be the smoothest technical player around. Flashy\, fast\, inventive and musical and that isn’t easy.” (GUITAR PLAYER) \nRick Ruskin started playing guitar in 1962 and in just one year became a respected professional musician in his native Detroit\, Michigan. In 1964\, while still in Jr. High School\, he was chosen to open the bill for the Reverend Gary Davis at Detroit’s legendary Retort Coffee House. This engagement resulted in a fast and permanent friendship with the master blues\, ragtime\, and gospel guitarist. Rev. Davis was so taken by the young Ruskin’s skill and eagerness\, that he invited Rick to spend that summer with him at his Long Island home. By the end of the summer\, Davis stopped teaching Rick new material and told him\, “It’s time you started paying attention to your own music.” Ruskin has been doing that ever since. \nIn addition to being a top guitar player\, Rick is a singer\, composer and arranger of note. He is known for his many fine compositions such as “Maze Music for Mice\,” “Six String Conspiracy\,” and “Kudah Duxx\,” a track previously featured in Fingerstyle Guitar magazine. He’s also known for his arrangements of such pop classics as “Lady Madonna\,” “Riki Don’t Lose That Number\,” and “Here Comes The Sun\,”\n Rick will also perform some tunes from his latest CD\, “How to be smarter than your guitar.” \nRick will also be conducting a fingerstyle guitar workshop featuring blues/ragtime/pop styles from 4-6pm at Boulevard Music. \nhttp://www.liondogmusic.com

SUMMARY:LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum are widely regarded as being among the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time. Featuring Brandon Godman superb fiddler from the great Bluegrass state of Kentucky\, and Max Schwartz known for turning heads with his blazing solos on upright bass and banjo. Laurie’s strength manifests in many ways: her commanding presence on stage combined with an emotional vulnerability\, the truths in her lyrics\, her physical voice which transcends gender\, her strong commitment to causes and issues in which she deeply believes\, which all resonate with a respect for the land\, the natural world\, and human mercy and justice.” –– Darol Anger \n“A quintessential stylist who creates mandolin breaks with the same passion and precision Monet put into his brush strokes\, Tom Rozum ought to be recognized as a mandolinist of the first order.” –– Mandolin Magazine \nhttp://www.laurielewis.com

SUMMARY:DAN CRARY\, BILL EVANS\, & WALLY BARNICK-WORKSHOPS BY DAN & BILL ALSO
DESCRIPTION:Join flatpicking pioneer Dan Crary\, banjo legend Bill Evans\, and SoCal acoustic favorite Wally Barnick as they come together for the first time to perform cutting edge bluegrass\, folk\, and Americana music. \nDan Crary is a pioneer of flatpicking guitar solos in a bluegrass band\, right up there with founding fathers Doc Watson\, Clarence White and Norman Blake in carving a role for the flatpick guitar soloist in bluegrass music. A founding member of the Bluegrass Alliance\, and the “newgrass” approach\, his 20+ year collaboration with Byron Berline and John Hickman (as BCH and in the bands Sundance & California) earned him numerous awards and accolades. A veteran of tours in more than thirty countries\, Dan’s a stylist with an international reputation for taste and brilliance. His “racing licks sounded like the fretboard equivalent of Fred Astaire dancing up\, then down a staircase.”
(LA Times) \nBill Evans is an internationally loved five-string banjo life force. Whether he’s lending his instrumental chops to a blazing fiddle tune or performing one of his original compositions\, Bill is one of contemporary banjo’s treasures. He’s probably the only banjo on earth who has performed with the San Francisco Symphony\, on A Prairie Home Companion and with Dan and Wally! He’s at home with traditional and contemporary bluegrass as well as branching out on the farthest musical limbs that Dan and Wally can take him. \nWally Barnick (bass & vocals) describes himself as “principally a singer who some 40 years ago took up playing bass guitar in order to ensure a place in the band.” That strategy has definitely worked for this wonderful singer and instrumentalist\, who is at home singing and playing everything from folk and bluegrass to Bakersfield country and even some rock and roll. Wally has performed with many familiar California Americana and bluegrass groups in these past four decades\, including the Cache Valley Drifters\, Bluegrass\, Etc.\, and The Hay Dudes. His warm vocals and engaging stage presence are a perfect complement to Dan and Bill’s instrumental fireworks. \nA Crary\, Evans & Barnick show includes new songs and old stories\, blazing instrumental artistry\, and deep-down\, powerfully-felt musical moments. It’s whistling winds in the pines\, rambling boys and tragic girls\, joys and laughter from old times\, furious and foot-tapping instrumental tunes\, and a little touch of glory-to-God. And it’s the hovering ghosts of Jimmie Rogers and The Carter Family and Bill and Lester and Earl and Woody and all the greats who showed the way. \n  \nhttp://www.dancrary.com \nhttp://www.billevansbanjo.com \nhttp://www.wallybarnickmusic.com \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:BRUCE FORMAN'S THE RED GUITAR & BRUCE FORMAN'S JUNK YARD DUO
DESCRIPTION:Many of you already know Bruce Forman’s work as the jazz/western swing/bop guitarist in the band Cow Bop. Tonight Bruce does what his bumper sticker on the back of his horse says—My other performance platform is. . . Tonight we present two of Bruces other musical endeavors\, The Red Guitar and the Junk Yard Duo. A busy touring schedule; seventeen recordings as a leader; countless sideman recording dates–including a featured role on one of jazz great Ray Brown’s last albums; soundtrack performances on three of Clint Eastwood’s distinguished films–the Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby\, Oscar-nominated Flags of Our Fathers and Hereafter; producer\, arranger\, and acclaimed educator; over twenty appearances at the landmark Monterey Jazz Festival; in residence at USC ’s Studio / Jazz Guitar Dept.—when does Bruce Forman rest? Forman is a seasoned jazz player with top-level skills as a leader\, entertainer and sideman. He creates soulful\, lyrical melodies\, inventive harmonies\, and solid accompaniment. Though he can shred bebop at blistering tempos with the best of ‘em\, he is no urban snob. Cow Bop\, Forman’s unique “western bebop” band\, hit four separate charts with its CDs\, Swingin’ Out West\, Route 66\, Too Hick for the Room and Cowlifornia Swing. In May 2014\, Cow Bop was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame. \nThe Red Guitar— \nImagine receiving an invitation to a gala featuring John Coltrane\, Sigmund Freud\, and Faust. Bruce Forman’s “The Red Guitar” is all that and more. It draws on Forman’s decades of experience as a formidable jazz guitarist and his considerable skill as a storyteller and teacher\, producing a work that is greater than the sum of its dazzling parts. A story in and about jazz\, The Red Guitar showcases Bruce Forman’s genre—breaking inventiveness and his ability to improvise and create within a classical form. Enlisting the full power of the jazz idiom and integrating it with seasoned and provocative story-telling\, he confronts the dilemma of artistic obsession face-to-face—by creating a work of art that simultaneously explores and demonstrates the hold that music has over its most ardent followers\, the hold that poses itself as a life-or-death\, must-be-solved-question: “The Red Guitar. Do you play it…or does it play you? See where you stand. See and hear The Red Guitar   \nThe Junk Yard Duo— \nScavenging music form the edge of sound\, Junkyard Duo uses unique instrumentation and exotic sounds to create a spontaneous and intimate improvisational exploration of styles and approaches. Hobo chic at it’s most utmost!!! \nhttp://www.bruceforman.com \n\n

SUMMARY:ADAM DEL MONTE ENSEMBLE
DESCRIPTION:One of the leading flamenco and classical guitarist/composers of his generation\, Adam del Monte has made it his life mission to fully express himself in these two genres\, transcending labeling and convention. Always having incorporated a wide array of musical styles in his compositions\, del Monte has embarked on a journey of creating a unique sound and language of flamenco that is both steeped in tradition and progressive in its openness to musical flavors from around the world. Del Monte has recorded for Deutsche Gramophone – the featured flamenco guitar part in the double Grammy award winning opera “Ainadamar” by Osvaldo Golijov (2006)\, with soprano Dawn Upshaw and the Atlanta Symphony\, conducted by Robert Spano. Since then he has toured this opera in\, Carnegie Hall\, NY\, Lincoln Center\, NY\, Barbican Center\, London\, Colorado Music Festival\, in Boulder\, Chicago Symphony and many more. Del Monte has recently composed his second flamenco guitar concerto\, “Paisajes”\, which was debuted and commissioned by the St. Monica Symphony. He has since performed it with the Moscow State Symphony in Tchaikovsky Hall and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra\, in Caracas\, Venezuela. He has also recorded “Avner’s Theme” by film composer John Williams for the sound track CD of the motion picture “ Munich” by Steven Spielberg. Other film credits include featured participations in Films such as Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and Mr and Mrs. Smith with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie\, music by John Powell\, and Toy Story 3\, music by Randy Newman. Del Monte has also performed with flamenco singer Enrique Morente and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra\, as well as with Lole’ y Manuel. Del Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the previous virtual space of Spanish flamenco. Del Monte\, too\, set out in new directions\, integrating years of traditional and leading –edge flamenco training as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An eclectic awareness of jazz\, world music and other contemporary forms led to new\, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire.  \nIn February of 2000 he performed the Concierto de Aranjuez with the LA Philharmonic. In  June 2000\, he performed at the Hollywood Bowl\, once with his flamenco ensemble and once with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and classical Spanish dancer Lola Greco. \n Adam performed as soloist the Concierto de Aranjuez at Disney Hall several times. He has also performed the “Aranjuez” with the Pacific Symphony with Carl St. Claire. In 2005 del Monte took part in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Series at Disney Hall\, performing the “Histoire du Tango” by Astor Piazzolla with violinist Mark Kashper. He was a member of the Falla Guitar Trio from 2007-2012  where he performed extensively all around the US. \n In 2008 he has performed his Flamenco Concerto and the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Ranana Symphonet\, conducted by Nir Kabaretti. \n First Prize Winner at the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition\, del Monte is one of the new generations dynamic force in both flamenco and classical guitar. \nhttp://www.adamdelmonte.com
