SUMMARY:JAMES LEE STANLEY
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the release of his album “The Day Today” James will perform some of fantastic new songs off the album. In James Lee’s own words: “It is the longest opus I have ever created. The few that have given me input tell me it’s the best recording I have ever done. I tend to agree. I spent the entire lockdown writing and recording it here on top of a mountain in Bear Valley Springs with the original idea of culling the 17 songs down to an even dozen\, but three years of writing\, rewriting and recording and re-recording have left me with the decision to include them all.” James wrote or co wrote all the songs\, played most of the instruments did all the lead vocals and many of the background vocals. \n“So where have they been hiding James Lee Stanley? We could say that James Lee Stanley is probably the last great undiscovered singersongwriter in America. But true as that may be let’s say something else. Let’s say that a diamond has been smuggled into the wasteland… and here is where the wasteland ends.”\n–  Tom Robbins\, Author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues \nJames is celebrating his latest release of the film of his life as a performer called The Opening Act: The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley (Winner of Best Documentary at the Nashville Film Festival).\nThe film covers how James Lee Stanley has been the opening act for virtually every famous performer in music and comedy for over 50 years — Linda Ronstadt\, Chicago\, Poco\, Stephen Stills\, David Crosby\, America\, Emmylou Harris\, The Grass Roots\, Ricky Skaggs\, Little Feat\, comedy legends Robin Williams\, Steven Wright\, Andy Kaufman — the list goes on & on. The documentary is a wonderful\, entertaining and uplifting look at a remarkable career and a window into the actual world of Show Biz. Included are interviews with such luminaries as comedian Steven Wright and in the music world John Densmore of the Doors\, Timothy B Schmit of the Eagles\, Stephen Bishop\, Henry Diltz\, Uber Agent Mike Kappus\, all of whom attest to James Lee’s validity as an artist\, entertainer\, and composer. \nStarting his career in the early 60’s\, James’s story is woven through the decades. He’s written over 1\,000 songs and released 34 albums to brilliant reviews. With sharp wit and warm\, self-effacing humor\, he tells funny\, touching stories about love\, adventure\, defiance. \nTonight James will also perform music including tunes from another recent recording “Without Susie” which is a versatile and refreshing mix of acoustic guitar fueled socio-political commentary and love songs featuring his modern age blues tune “Hang Up and Drive.” He also did a recent recording with Dan Navarro called Wood and Led which features great original arrangements of Led Zeppelin tunes done acoustically. \nIt is only a long lived singer-songwriter career that lets JAMES LEE STANLEY unite the unpredictable creativity and the eclectic elements that make up his world. His remarkable ability as a vocalist and composer allow him to create songs\, each recorded with a finely crafted backing that sonically enhance the impulse behind the lyric\, coupled with his outragously hilarious repartee. He is one of the few all time greats and undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters. Fi Magazine listed his FREELANCE HUMAN BEING as “one of the finest recordings of 1998 and one of the Top 200 Recordings.”\nJAMES LEE STANLEY\, the true renaissance man\, was born into a musical family in Philadelphia\, PA\, and already performing and recording for LeGrand Records by the time he was fourteen. He majored in music at California State University\, did a stint in the Air Force as a chinese linguist\, performing three hundred dates a year with such diverse acts as BONNIE RAITT\, ROBIN WILLIAMS\, and CHICK COREA & RETURN TO FOREVER by the time he landed his second recording contract. Always a fun night with great stories. \nhttps://www.jamesleestanley.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:THE TRANSATLANTIC TRIO—RICHARD SMITH\, JOSCHO STEPHAN\, & RORY HOFFMAN
DESCRIPTION:The Transatlantic Guitar Trio features Richard Smith from the U.K.\, Germany’s Joscho Stephan and American multi-instrumentalist Rory Hoffman. Together they combine jazz ballads\, gypsy swing standards\, Travis/Chet Atkins picking\, pop music plus some original compositions to create a repertoire of fresh arrangements in the styles of the great guitarists Django Reinhardt\, Chet Atkins\, Jerry Reed\, and Merle Travis. \nThe history of these incredible players includes these brief descriptions: \nRichard Smith is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. Incredible fingerstyle player (2001 National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion) and\, also\, one of the hottest Bebop/Django/Flatpicking players in the world. Richard Smith performs everything from fingerpicking classics\, originals\, Joplin rags\, jazz standards\, classical and everything from pop to Sousa marches. The playing ranges from amazing to flashy and beautiful. Here are a couple of quotes regarding Richard from Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. “The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know\, only better.” Chet Atkins\, CGP \nJoscho Stephan shapes modern gypsy swing with his playing like no other: With his authentic tone\, his harmonic finesse and his sense of rhythm\, but above all with his breathtaking solo technique\, Stephan has earned himself an outstanding reputation on the international guitar scene. Like no other\, he knows how to stand out from the multitude of current Gypsy Swing adaptations by combining Gypsy Swing with Latin\, Classical and Rock\, in addition to numerous interpretations of the well-known classics of the genre. His debut album ‘Swinging Strings’ was voted CD of the month in 1999 by Guitar Player magazine. In 2004\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine celebrated Joscho Stephan as the future of gypsy jazz guitar. For the CD “Guitar Heroes” in 2015\, Joscho Stephan invited guitar greats like Bireli Lagrène\, Stochelo Rosenberg and Tommy Emmanuel. \nRory Hoffman started teaching himself to play guitar and piano at age 3. By age 5 he was the drummer in the family band. He currently plays over a dozen stringed\, keyboard and wind instruments. Rory has played the Grand Ole Opry numerous times\, as a soloist and as a sideman with Ricky Skaggs\, Kathy Mattea and John Cowan. Working with these stars and others has enabled him to play several notable festivals\, including Telluride with John Cowan\, and Djangofest as part of the John Jorgenson quintet. “Just Jazz Guitar” and “Guitar Player” magazines have written feature articles about Hoffman’s unique guitar style. Rory is 2-time winner of Musician of the Year from Nashville’s ICMA\, and is a 2012 inductee into the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame. Tour de Fourth is Rory’s latest album. Rather than focus on a certain style of music\, this album features music that demonstrates Rory’s skill and diverse interests in country\, western swing\, jazz\, polka\, latin\, gypsy jazz\, bluegrass and gospel music. It is a mix of original songs\, and fresh arrangements of standards. \nhttps://www.richardsmithmusic.com/ \nhttps://joscho-stephan.de/en \nhttps://www.roryhoffman.com/ \nRead more

SUMMARY:CLIVE CARROLL
DESCRIPTION:British guitarist Clive Carroll has a deep knowledge of music history\, arranges\, composes\, can lay down a blues with the best of them\, and is a captivating performer. Born in England\, Clive began his musical journey in Chelmsford\, Essex. His parents had a taste for American country and old time music and it wasn’t long before Clive was playing in the family band on a homemade banjo. By his early teens\, guitar in hand\, Clive was traversing the worlds of soul\, pop\, funk\, and traditional Irish music\, balancing his affinity for Slayer with the etudes of Tárrega. This breadth of musical curiosity was to become one of his strengths; even as a child Clive was as comfortable accompanying a group of folk singers as he was jamming along to Nirvana or performing standards with the Essex Youth Orchestra. Clive went on to earn a 1st Class Honours Degree in Composition and Guitar from the famed Trinity College of Music in London\, all the while balancing his classical work with forays into the world of the steel string guitar. By the time he graduated from Trinity\, Clive had not only penned orchestral works\, he had written an album’s worth of solo acoustic guitar music. A chance meeting with English guitar legend John Renbourn proved the catalyst for Clive’s debut album\, “Sixth Sense”\, which Renbourn deemed “a milestone in the journey of the steel-string guitar”. He subsequently took Clive on the road with him and the pair toured North America and Europe together\, launching Clive’s solo performing career. Since then\, Clive has established himself as one of the world’s premier acoustic guitar players. He has toured across Europe\, Australia\, the Middle East and North America\, garnering praise for his sublime performances of everything from 16th and 17th century lute music to Jazz standards\, Blues\, Irish reels and his own groundbreaking compositions. Lauded guitarist Tommy Emmanuel (“Clive Carroll is one of my favorite guitarists\, Trust me go see him!”) has also taken Clive on the road\, and similar nods to Clive’s musicianship have been given by everyone fromclassical guitarist John Williams to Madonna\, Guy Ritchie\, Michelin award-winning chef Jean-Christophe Novelli\, and the Sultanate of Oman. To date\, Clive has released five solo albums; “Sixth Sense”\, “The Red Guitar” (which Tommy Emmanuel cites as one of his desert island discs!)\, “Life in Colour” and “The Furthest Tree”. Clive has also written music for television and film\, most notably composing the music for the film “Driving Lessons”\, which features Julie Walters and Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame. Clives newest CD is “The Abbot” (2023). Clive Carroll playing the music of John Renbourn. \n2000 –  “Probably the best and most original young acoustic guitarist/composer in Britain.” –  Acoustic Guitar Magazine \n2021 – “…arguably the most accomplished fingerstylist in the world today…” – Total Guitar Magazine \nhttps://www.clivecarroll.co.uk/index.html \nhttps://www.boulevardmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Clive-Carroll.mp4\nRead more

A guitarist with an upbeat\, finger-poppin’ picking style he learned at the elbows of bluesmasters Sam ‘Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Mance Lipscomb\, Mississippi Fred MacDowell\, and others. Yet\, Bernie Pearl is no hidebound traditionalist. As music critics and aficionados have said for years\, he is a craftsman who packs his songs with melodic interpretations that are new and personal each time he picks up his vintage Martin or National. To hear him tell it\, “I’m not a retro player. I’m playing real blues for right now.” \nBernie\, who grew up in the Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights\, took up the guitar in the 1950’s. Later\, at his brother’s legendary blues showcase\, the Ash Grove\, he met\, studied with\, and often performed with greats like Hopkins\, Lipscomb\, and MacDowell as well as with Freddie King\, Albert Collins\, and Big Mama Thornton. Bernie played duets with John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village. “They were my teachers\,” he says\, “and it wasn’t just music they were teaching. If you took Mance or Lightnin’ out fishing you got philosophy\, history\, and lessons in life”. \nArmed with the teachings of those and other blues icons\, Bernie raises the roof with dazzling guitar solos – acoustic and electric – and with his own Bernie Pearl Blues Band\, which has backed the likes of B.B. King\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Willie Dixon\, and Big Joe Turner. The Bernie Pearl Blues Band has been a popular draw at many of Southern California’s best-known musical haunts: the House of Blues\, California Plaza Presents\, the Blue Café\, Disney’s California Adventure\, and the Playboy Pasadena Community Jazz Festival. Bernie has appeared at major Festivals in Chicago\, The Poconos\, Vancouver\, Portland\, and Long Beach\, as well as in Europe. \nA life-long blues evangelist\, Bernie began broadcasting Nothin’ But the Blues on KPPC FM in 1968\, making him L.A.’s first all-blues FM disc jockey. He went on to host the blues on KLON and KCRW from 1980-92\, helping found the Long Beach Blues Festival along the way. \nHis 15-year relationship with Louisiana blues man Harmonica Fats produced three outstanding CDs\, with the unplugged Two Heads Are Better and Blow\, Fat Daddy\, Blow\, each garnering W.C. Handy nominations in the mid-1990’s. Tonight Pearl shares the stage with bassist/vocalist  Elizabeth Hangan who is a perfect match to set the groove on the tunes they perform. \nBernie applied his studio skills as a producer and songwriter-arranger of jazz-rocking violin pioneer Papa John Creach’s critically-acclaimed 1992 Papa Blues CD (Bee Bump BBCD 03). \nAs president of Big Time Blues Productions\, Pearl was named national “Blues Promoter of the Year” by the Blues Foundation in 1987\, and he continues to book\, promote\, advertise\, and oversee blues acts at annual events such as the Big Time Blues Festival and the Blues Harmonica Blowdown. He has taught blues history and blues guitar courses at several area universities\, and continues to teach at Cal State Long Beach\, as well as privately. \nHis first solo CD\, released in August 2002\, was recorded in an all-acoustic concert at Culver City’s Boulevard Music and is appropriately titled Bernie Pearl Live From Boulevard Music (Major Label ML 011-CD). \nFor music lovers tired of market-tested commercial radio and industry-buffed overnight phenoms\, Pearl provides virtuosity\, country wisdom\, a warm voice\, and the kind of fingerpicking and slide guitar work that still gets juke-joints jumping. \n“…Pearl’s music and voice evoke the unpretentious\, truth-telling qualities of the blues. The sparse arrangements that grace this 15-song set only heighten the soulful and spiritual nature of the music. Pearl’s guitar virtuosity is evident\, whether he’s playing lead\, rhythm\, or slide guitar…his version of (Son House’s) Shetland Pony Blues would make the old master proud” \nStephen A. King\, Living Blues Magazine \n“Making blues music draws from someplace deep\,” he says. “I’m lucky. It’s what I do.” \nhttp://www.berniepearl.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:BANSHEE IN THE KITCHEN
DESCRIPTION:Banshee in the Kitchen plays Celtic music with eclectic skill and merry abandon.Touring and recording since 2002\, the quartet has delighted audiences in festivals\, theaters\, living rooms\, and countless other venues from NewYork to Japan. They take traditional Celtic tunes\, find the sweet spot between old and new\, stirring it all up with trademark playfulness and musicality they term “bansheefying”. \nTo do it right\, Celtic music requires a certain amount of sassiness\, a bit of impudence along with strong respect and joyful spirit. The four women of Banshee in the Kitchen know how to balance their audacity with reverence of the art form.\n—Joe Ross\, reviewer\, talentondisplay.com and Bluegrass Unlimited \nNational Champion hammered dulcimer player Brenda Hunter (fiddle\, hammered dulcimer) and Jill Egland (flute\,accordion\, whistle) trade off inspired flights of lead and counter melody overdynamic backing by Kat Edmonson (six and twelve string guitar\, bouzouki) plus a solid instrumental bottom voice provided by Kris Wilber (upright bass). No strangers to the microphone\, the four trade off lead and backing vocals on a choice selection of songs\, as well as jocularcommentary in between. \nhttps://www.bansheeinthekitchen.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:MAIRE NI CHATHASAIGH & CHRIS NEWMAN
DESCRIPTION:“This celebrated duo took the place by storm. Stately Carolan tunes\, jazzy Django-ish numbers\, dazzling Doc Watson style flat picking fliers\, driving Irish dance tunes – this pair can nonchalantly do the lot. Guitar players applauded and went sadly home to burn their instruments!” The Belfast Telegraph. The virtuoso partnership of England’s premier flatpicking guitarist and “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” (LIVE IRELAND) has by now brought its unique musical vision to twenty-two countries on five continents.Chris and Máire have performed at over 175 folk\, Celtic\, arts\, harp and guitar festivals in Europe\, the USA and Australasia and have given almost two thousand concerts in venues large and small – from the tiniest of historic churches in England\, Germany and Italy to palaces in Kyoto and Istanbul\, London’s Barbican\, Sydney’s Town Hall and the Philharmonie in Cologne. Together they have created one of the most distinctive voices in modern acoustic music. Their six duo and five solo CDs\, instructional books and collaborations with many other luminaries of the Celtic\, folk\, swing jazz and bluegrass worlds express both the depth of their commitment to tradition and an eternally playful\, curious and adventurous spirit.Over the years Chris and Máire have toured with Altan\, Sharon Shannon\, Cherish the Ladies\, Patrick Street\, the Rankins\, Mary Black\, Maura O’Connell\, Dónal Lunny\, Aly Bain\, Boys of the Lough and many other leading bands and artists. \nChris is a “brilliant English master of the acoustic guitar” (THE DAILY TELEGRAPH)\, a “dazzling player” (ACOUSTIC GUITAR\, USA) whose work is “nothing short of brilliant” (DIRTY LINEN\, USA). He began to play guitar at the age of four and at fourteen played his first paid gig in a folk club. A prolific composer\, arranger and record producer\, he’s played with luminaries of many musical worlds: folk (Boys of the Lough\, Kathryn Tickell\, Aly Bain\, Danny Thompson\, Arty McGlynn\, Nollaig Casey – and Máire)\, jazz (Stéphane Grappelli and Diz Disley) and comedy (Fred Wedlock) – receiving a silver disc for producing Fred’s international hit Oldest Swinger in Town\, to which he also composed the tune and which reached No 2 in the charts in the UK and No 1 in several other countries. Maire Ni Chathasaigh is one of Ireland’s most influential traditional musicians\, described by the late Derek Bell of the Chieftains as “the most interesting and original player of the Irish harp today” and as “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” by Live Ireland. She has played harp since the age of eleven. As a 1970s West Cork teenager steeped in the oral tradition she developed new techniques that made it possible for the first time to play traditional music on the harp in a stylistically accurate way. These soon became the norm amongst both her contemporaries and the younger generation of Irish players. In 2001 she received Irish music’s most prestigious award\, that of Traditional Musician of the Year – Gradam Cheoil TG4 – “for the excellence and pioneering force of her music\, the remarkable growth she has brought to the music of the harp and the positive influence she has had on the young generation of harpers”. She won the All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic Harp Competitions several times and in 1985 recorded the first harp album ever to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music\, The New-Strung Harp- “an intensely passionate and intelligent record and a milestone in Irish harp music” THE IRISH EXAMINER. Her approach has been profoundly influential – “a single-handed reinvention of the harp”. Máire has performed for a number of dignitaries\, among them Pope John Paul II and the King and Queen of Spain. \n\n\nhttps://www.maireandchris.com/ \nRead more

DESCRIPTION:While described by the press as a “fire breathing guitar hero” or nicknamed “Spain’s King of Twang” by Guitar Player\, 2013 Latin Grammy winner Diego García goes for a more poetic phrasing to define himself: a 3-in-1 guitarist deeply in love with his instruments – which he secretly calls “his ladies”. Renowned for his fingerpicking technique\, incredible versatility and distinctive ‘twang’ sound\, his music is an unusual fusion of classical Spanish guitar\, Latin rhythms\, country\, rockabilly\, jazz…and even surf music.\nSince the age of 6\, when he first started playing chords\, he has always found anchorage and inspiration in the surrounding world\, finding beauty & joy in the “Here and Now” and transcribing it into music.\nHis style and sounds keep surprising and delighting listeners with every new album. Anyone acquainted with Twanguero’s work knows how much of a gift his music is\, for both the ears and the soul.\nTo the ones not initiated yet\, we can only invite them to experience his twang and try to describe it with their own emotions and words.\nDiego has played and recorded with great artists such as Andrés Calamaro\, Mercedes Sosa\, Juan Perro\, Diego El Cigala\, Fito Paez\, Bunbury\, Wycleaf Jean\, Juanes\, Jaime Urrutia\, Ely Guerra\, Raphael\, Camilo Sesto\, Ana Torroja\, José María Cano\, Yerbabuena\, and Adriana Varela\, among others. He has also participated in original soundtracks recordings for TV\, Radio & Cinema both in his native Spain and in the Americas. \nhttps://twanguero.com \nRead more

SUMMARY:THE FOLK COLLECTION
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Collection impresses audiences of all ages\, with set lists full of beloved songs like “This Land is Your Land\,” “Blowin’ in the Wind\,” “Greenback Dollar\,” and “City of New Orleans.” Renee Gaumond\, formerly of Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage Coffee House\, has said\, “The Folk Collection is a testament to the enduring quality of this upbeat and universal music\, and the best way to enjoy it is to sing and clap right along with them. Bring your kids\, because they’ll have a great time\, too.” In addition to performing several of their original songs\, The Folk Collection’s arrangement of a medley of TV western theme songs from the 50’s (including Bonanza\, Davy Crockett\, and Rawhide)\, is always one of the highlights of their show. \nIt all started in the mid 60’s\, when Hollywood High School buddies Ed Labowitz and Tony Unger performed in a local folk trio. After the military\, Tony was a touring musician and pop singer for 15 years. Ed went on to law school at Cal. Mike Sirota played folk songs as a camp counselor in Los Angeles and then graduated and received his teaching credential from Cal. Flash forward to the new century. After many years\, Ed and Tony put their old folk trio together\, only this time they added new friend\, Mike\, and The Folk Collection was formed. Their memorable three-part harmonies now bring family and friends together\, making even more merriment and memories. \nLabowitz is an L.A. entertainment lawyer\, Sirota serves as a cantorial soloist at two Southern California synagogues\, and Unger is the pastor of a church in Bishop\, California. Just like the folk songs they have performed around the country\, the magic lies within seemingly disparate elements coming together as one\, creating the unforgettable music that continues to shape our lives. \n“We grew up loving this sort of music\, and we’ve been thrilled by the amazing response to our shows from people of all ages who really get a kick out of joining in with the words and harmonies. The show is all about folk music and good clean jokes\,” says Labowitz. Unger adds\, “The Folk Collection provides one of those all-too-rare opportunities for family friendly fun. We get a real kick out of watching teenagers reluctantly coming to our gigs as a favor to a their mom and dad\, and then watching them walk out of there smiling and humming the tunes that we all love so much. No matter how different we may be\, the music never fails to bring us together.” \nhttp://www.thefolkcollection.com \nRead more	\n \n \n
